The Tour de France will go up L'Alpe D'Huez this year. How long before the race do they close the roads?

Full question:

I will be in a motorhome and want to get onto the mountain. Will I have to be there a day or more before to drive and park on the mountain?

Best answer:

I followed the mountain stages in 2003 by bicycle, sometimes riding ahead of the tour, and only once did I run into a problem with the route being closed -- to all traffic, including bicycles. That took place about 3 hours before the riders were due to come through. They run it sort of like a rolling advance road block, so the entire route is not shut down for the day, just a few hours before the field is expected.

L'Alpe d'Huez Physics problem?

Full question:

In 2004, for the first time ever the Tour de France bicycle race organizers set a time trial on the famous climb from Bourg-D'Oisans to the top of L'Alpe d'Huez. The stage was won by Lance Armstrong with a winning time of 39 minutes and 42 seconds. The time trial consisted of 1.5 km of relatively flat road followed by 14.0 km of climbing. The Tour organizers classify the difficulty of climbs using Categories 1 (hardest) through 5 (easiest). The L'Alpe d'Huez climb is rated 'H.C' (Haute Categorie or beyond category) due to its length and steepness. The bottom of the mountain, the 'Pied de cote', is at 740 m above sea level and the top is 1850 m above sea level. Lance covered the first 1.5 km in just over two minutes (2:05). QUESTION: Estimate the average power needed for Lance simply to fight the force of gravity during the climb. You will need to estimate the total mass of Lance and his bicycle. I have no idea how to even start with this

Best answer:

Some have said that the time trial on L'Alpe d'Huez was put into the course specifically to challenge Lance to climb unassisted (In a regular mountain stage race, he would draft behind his team mates until he would break for the finish). Lance: America’s Lance Armstrong ...racing weight was 158-165 pounds (72-75 kg). for the bike: To ensure the 32-year-old Texan has every advantage, his equipment sponsors have joined forces in an unprecedented, cost-be-damned collaboration known as F-One. Their goal: to get Armstrong's rig as close as possible to the Union Cycliste Internationale minimum bike weight of 6.8 kilograms (about 15 pounds) and make the rest of his gear as light and aerodynamic as possible. Estimate total mass of Lance, bike and gear to be 75+7=82 kg The total elevation gain of the climb is 1850-740 m or 1110 m The total climb time was 39 min 42 sec minus 2 min 5 seconds or 2257 seconds The total gain in PE was 82*9.81*1110 892906 J so the average power was 892906/2257 W 396 W Which is astounding As a modest comparison, I have a high cardio range: 48 bpm resting and 193 bpm maximum. I can sustain 220 W for over 60 min at a heart rate of 172 bpm, which allows me to climb Mt Diablo in 69 minutes (9 minutes too long for the special t-shirt). Together my mass of 82 kg, my bike and gear about 12 kg, for a total of 94 kg. The average work against gravity on this climb for me is 990.3*9.81*94/(69*60) W or 220 W Here's some info about that climb: Mt. Diablo Challenge Bicycle Race The Mt. Diablo Challenge is a bicycle race held annually on the first Sunday in October. The race begins at the Athenian School at the base of the mountain and climbs 3,249 feet (990.3 m) in 10.8 miles (17.4 km). The race typically draws between 800 to 1,100 riders each year who compete in a mass-start format. Bicycle riders of every age and ability are represented in the diverse field, from weekend enthusiasts to top professionals. Prizes are typically awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, along with several age-specific categories. The most coveted prize is the special "One-Hour" t-shirts, awarded to those who finish the climb in less than one hour. Course Record The course record for the Mt. Diablo climb currently stands at 44 minutes, 58 seconds, set in 2004 by former professional cyclist Greg Drake (Webcor Cycling Team) of Redwood City, California[2]. The previous course record was set by former professional cyclist Mike Engleman (Coors Light Pro Cycling Team) in 1990 with a time of 45 minutes, 20 seconds. Lance is an amazing human being. _____________________-

Val Thorens or Alpe d'huez?

Full question:

Me and a group of mates are trying to sort a ski holiday we have 2 resorts to chose from alpe d'huez or val thorens we will be going to one of them its just a case of which one, so which would you recommend?

Best answer:

Depends what you are looking for - value for money I would say Alpe D'Huez - the lift pass there is cheaper than the 3 Valleys (and the ski area is excellent). The Visalp pass in Alpe D'Huez also includes the swimming pool, ice rink, sports centre and night skiing as well as access to the Grand Galaxie ski resorts, which means you can go on a ski away day to either Les Deux Alpes, Serre Chevalier or Montgenevre Chances are you will have a shorter transfer time to Alpe D'Huez too (although this will depend where you are flying to). Both resorts have a good nightlife.

has anyone stayed at Chalet Amelie near Alpe d'huez in france?

Full question:

what is chalet Amelie like to stay in? is the snow good around this time of year on the mountains?

Best answer:

Chalet Amélie is a lovely old house that has been extremely well adapted and modernised. It is very stylish, warm and comfortable as skiing accommodation goes, and compares favourably with many other chalets in the area . It is conveniently close the ski lift, and the village centre. As chalets go it is considered to be in the luxury class and if you are going there you are lucky. The last snow fall was 48 hours ago and it is soft on the resort runs. Higher up on the slopes the depth of snow is 170 cms thick and lower down 130cms. At the moment the temperature is -2 celsius, and, yes, this year the snow is good at this time. If you have not skied before, the school is excellent and the beginner slopes are particularly nice to use. Good place! If you are going for Easter, have a lovely time!

In what year came Robby McEwan over the finnish line in alpe d'huez on his back wheel?

Full question:

He was wearing the green jersea that moment.

Best answer:

2004. Though he's been doing wheelies for years on mountain tops, dating as far back as I can remember - 1997, I think. I saw a photo of McEwen and Andreu rolling across the finish line together as McEwen was doing a wheelie. Andreu could be seen laughing next to him.

how long should it take to cycle up Alpe D'Huez in the French Alps?

Full question:

Best answer:

The current record time for Alpe d'Huez is 38 minutes set by Lance Armstrong. A good oprocyclist in the Tour usually completes it in around an hour. Your own result will depend on fitness level, weather and wind conditions and even the weight of the bike you are riding can make a difference to the final time. A fit amateur should be able to do it in 1-2hrs, and a leisure ride would probably take about 3 or so hours at normal pace. Just use a low gear and remember to drink lots. Good carb-based food before the ride is also a good idea. It would also be a good idea to speak with a sports doctor before as well.

Has anyone visited Alpe D'Huez in July?

Full question:

I'm taking my family (wife - assuming she sorts her passport out!) and 3 children (agred 7, 5 and 2) to Alpe in the summer. We need to travel light so packing the right stuff is important.....what is the temperature like? We've heard conflicting 'facts' from friends.

Best answer:

HI, i was lucky enough to cycle up there several years ago, and it was hot has hades. So take some high factor sun screen and plenty of water. Also pack some light but warm clothing and a hat has well with wrap around sun glass`s,like all mountain areas the weather can change very quick. So better pack some water proofs, had rain there once or twice when i was on a walking holiday in August has well. Well have fun and take care in that sun

How much time can Cadel Evans gain on Stage 19 and the Grenoble TT?

Full question:

Can Evans still win yellow? How much time do you think he will have to gain on Schleck and Voeckler on Alpe d'Huez? How much faster will he be in the ITT? Leave your opinions below. Thanks :)

Best answer:

Monty The Shleck's are not known for their time trial abilities. Though last year, either Cantadore road poorly, or Andy went above and beyond... BUT Cadel is an excellent time trial rider. He can be expected to gain a nmiute or two over the Schleck's . Contadore is also an excellent time trial rider. So the winner will probably be Cadel IF he can limit any loss or make a good gain in time today. Contadore appears to be too far back to make it. He needs to gain back two + minutes today AND get 2 plus minutes in the time trail to make it to the top of the podium! The last two days should be loads of fun! Soccerref

Assume his teammates do such a good job riding ahead of him that he can draft behind them and encounter no air resistance. This climb is described as "beyond classification" in terms of its difficulty. The climb is 13.8 km long at a 7.9% average grade (the grade, as a decimal, is the tangent of the angle of inclination). Assume that the combined mass of Lance and his bicycle is 83 kilograms. What is the magnitude of the work he does against the force of gravity?

Best answer:

Work done in terms of lifting mass = increase in vertical height x g x mass 7.9pct of 13.8 km is 1.0902 km or 1090 m work = 1090 x 9.81 x 83kg = 887.5 kJ Amazingly this is only the energy from chocolate bar. In reality most energy converted by the body would be wasted as heat ot to overcome friction between the bike/earth

Lance Armstrong bikes at a constant speed up the Alpe d'Huez, a famous mountain pass. Assume his teammates do such a good job riding ahead of him that he can draft behind them and encounter no air resistance. This climb is described as "beyond classification" in terms of its difficulty. The climb is 13.8 km long at a 4.6º average grade. Assume that the combined mass of Lance and his bicycle is 83 kilograms. What is the magnitude of the work he does against the force of gravity?

Best answer:

Humm.. You need to know how much work he has done shifting a mass against the force of gravity, so you need to know how much he has gone up vertically. If you know the tangent of 4.6º, that figure is the vertical distance divided by 13.8x10^3 m, which means 0.0805 = vertical distance / 13.8x10^3 m, which is 1.11 x 10^3 m That is the distance he has moved a mass of 83kg against the gravity. g or 'gravitational acceleration' is 9.8m/s^2 Force = mass x acceleration, so the force exerted is about 813 Newtons Work = Force x Distance, so it will be 813 x 1.11 x 10^3 = 902430 which you round to: 902 kJ ~~ possibly.

Trigonometry Word Problem?

Full question:

Stage 16 of the Tour De France was a time trial from Bourg d'Oisans to L'Alpe d'Huez. The average grade (slope as a percent) for most of the 15 kilometer mountainous trek was 7.9%. What was the change in elevation from the beginning to the end. I got π/4 since it's radial decimal is ~.79 which has some relevance to the grade of the slope, would it be 60°? Show work to elaborate on your help, thanks.

Best answer:

When expressed as the decimal equivalent of the percentage, the slope is the tangent of the angle (θ) of elevation (or angle of depression if descending) Then, tanθ = 0.079 : θ = 4.517° The 15km distance is measured along the road. This can be regarded as the hypotenuse with the elevation change (E) being the "opposite" side. Then sinθ = E/15 : E = 15sin4.517 = 1.1813 km

Tour De France - Stage 17?

Full question:

Tomorrow is the final day in the Alps and it takes in three hors catégorie climbs including the most famous - Alpe d'Huez. Who do you think will win the stage 17? And who will end the day in yellow?

Best answer:

Watching Team CSC ride today, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a breakaway at the start of Alpe d'Huez. They didn't look fatigued or beat down in anyway today and between the Frank, Andy, and Carlos they have the strength to open the gap up and give Frank a better lead going into the final TT. For the day, I wouldn't be surprised to see Menchov go with an earlier break away and a possible stage win, but not by enough to become a threat to Schleck.

Could someone please help me with my French homework pls pls . i just dont the when to use the imparfait.passe?

I just dont know when to use the imparfait or passe compose...any tips?

Best answer:

well, normally the passé composé is used to talk about a completed action, for example, j'ai joué = i played. but if you want to say, i was playing football (when something else happened), you would use the imparfait; je jouais. the imparfait is used to say 'I was playing' or also 'I used to play'; therefore if you were talking about an old routine, you'd use the imperfect tense. the imperfect is normally used to talk about an uncompleted action. hopefully that makes sense :) eh, bien moi, j'ai passé un tres bon week-end! dimanche, c'était mon anniversaire. Alors samedi, mon mari a fait le menage et les courses pendant que j'étais chez le coiffeur. Quand je suis rentré(e) a la maison, la maison était tres belle. Physics Problem Involving Power?

Full question:

At his training peak, Lance Armstrong was capable of generating 395 Watts with his aerobic metabolism, meaning that he could sustain this level of power output for extended periods of time. He uses crank arms of length 175 mm (this is the distance from the bottom bracket axle to the axle on which the pedals rotate), and pedals at the optimum cadence of 90 revolutions per minute while climbing. 1) What is the average force with which he pushes down on the pedals? You may assume the force is applied at 90 degrees to the crank arms. If we make the assumption that the rolling friction forces on the bicycle and air friction forces are negligible while climbing, 2) How long did it take Lance Armstrong to climb L'Alpe d'Huez in the French Alps, a 15.5 km (10 mile) time trial with an elevation change of 1,110 m? You can assume that Lance's racing mass was 75 kg and his climbing bike had a mass of 7 kg. Useful Information: The instantaneous power generated by a force that does work is the rate P = dW/dt at which it does work. The SI unit of power is the Watt, equal to 1 Joule per second. The average power is the work done by the force, divided by the time over which it was applied. If the work done by a force F through a small displacement dx is dW = F . dx, then the instantaneous power is P = F . v. The angular equivalent is that the work done by a torque t around some axis that causes an angular displacement dq around the same axis is dW = t dq, and the instantaneous power is P = t . w.

Best answer:

Good old lance. He could probably blow 6.0 - 6.5 l/min O2 which would be phenomenal for a guy his size. OK 1. E/t = Watts E = F*d F=E/d = 395 W * 2 pi 0.175m * 90 rev/min * 1 min/60 s = 651 N 2. PE = mgh = (75+7)kg * 9.81m/s^2 * 1,100 m = 884,862 J PE/t = Power (Watts) t = PE/Power = 884,862 J/ 395 W =2240 sec = 37 min 20 secs
