best Mt. Hood area ski resort?

I'm moving from Salt Lake to Portland. Keep in mind that Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Canyons, Park City Mtn, and Deer Valley are all within 40 minutes of my doorstep. Which resort at Mt. Hood offers the closest thing to Utah skiing?

Like Jim said, there's nothing here in Oregon that is close to the skiing you're used to in Utah. However, there is a lot of great cross-country and backcountry skiing at places like Crater Lake. By and large, Mt. Hood itself is a decent ski area, but it doesn't have the vertical or terrain you're used to. Assuming you're a pretty good skier, you'll probably get bored in fairly short order. On the plus side though, Mt. Hood is open for a good chunk of the summer, so you can get out and ski in the middle of July. That's not something you can get very often in Utah. Also on the plus side, Portland is actually pretty convenient to the Tahoe area. Its about 9 hours of driving, or a 1 hour plane flight from PDX to Reno. Ticket prices aren't bad. Plan ahead a little bit and you can get round trip airfare on Southwest in the $150 to $200 range. That's about what you'd pay for gas if you've got an SUV.

I'm staying in the Park City area, more specifically at The Canyons. I'm willing to drive if I have to to Cottonwood canyon or snowbasin. I'm just wondering where the best snow will be (if any...).

You'll just have to wait and see. Every year is different. Some years they are skiing at Snowbird on the 4th of July other years the resorts are closed by mid March. Ask this question in the end of Feb. to see what kind of snow pack we have.

Utah. Roads to the canyons ski resort?

I am curious how the roads are on the way up the mountain. I know that the weather always changes in the winter and stuff but im not sure if it is a good idea to take my car up there on just a normal ski day. I grew up with tons of snow and stuff so i know the risks and how to drive in it. your thoughts? ps. is there a shuttle that leaves from provo/orem area for cheap (like 20 bucks)?

Well if it isn't snowing its pretty normal but windy road.. Its not that bad though.. if it is snowing it may be a little more difficult because to drive up the canyon you need 4 wheel drive or chains.. So prepare accordingly. Its an interstate though so they keep it pretty clean after it snows. I am not aware of a shuttle from Provo.. but I would maybe look at RideUTA.com.. its the Utah public transportation site that has schedules and routes and everything.

Which skiing is more of a challange?

For the past few years a few friends and I have been going skiing in Park City, Utah. We've done most of the resorts in the immediate area (Canyons, Deer Valley, Park City Mtn.) .. Always had a great time - Although, I still have steered clear from the black trails out there.. Now this year we're changing it up and heading to Vail, CO. We'll be skiing Vail and Beever Creek. In comparison to Park City, what are we in for? Is Vail a more difficult ski trip than Park City? Haha, we'll if they are snobby to me i'll show then where i can stick my poles! But what about the faces/steepness and difficulty of the greens and blues in Vail, CO compared to the greens/blues of Utah.. Which State has steeper faces? I grew up on the east coast skiing VT mostly every year, and the west def. knows how to make me shake!

vail blows in a corporate "we want your money" kind of way. Its great if you can't ski very well and you just want to be seen. go to beaver creek... if you don't normally hit the blacks then you'll have all you can handle. I personally wouldn't go to any resort that vail has a hand in... they really were quite rude to my kids... at the time they were 8. what adults are mean to little kids on vacation? Vail and its employees want to be the best but are snobby about everything. stick to utah.

yea snowboarding is banned from those 2 places. I heard Deer Valley was the number 1 resort in america. oh well. My personal favorite is the Canyons but i like Park City as well. I go out there every winter and love it

What else can we do in the Colorado area at Xmas?

We are coming to Colorado to ski for Xmas. We are Australians, so what else can we do in the surrounding states at this time of year. Was thinking about seeing the grand canyon along the way - not sure about the weather. Any suggestions, we will have 4 weeks in total.

While you're skiing in Colorado, you could also try snowshoeing. It's a lot of fun and is probably available at the ski area that you'll be at. Some of the ski areas have nordic centers which include snowshoeing trails as well as cross-country ski trails. Anyway, I'm giving you a link to info. about some of the places you can go snowshoeing in Colorado.

To be more specific, I would recommend Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood. I also wouldn't limit your mountain experience to just Big Cottonwood. Little Cottonwood and Immigration Canyons are also great for hiking. Millcreek Canyon is gorgeous, too. Other things I would suggest are the aforementioned Kennecott Copper Mine, Hogle Zoo, Red Butte Gardens, Thanksgiving Point [shops and gardens], Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and Bridal Veil Falls. The Alpine Loop connects American Fork and Provo canyon and has gorgeous views along the way.

Im 18 and i'm making plans for some fun kind of adentury or really fun things to do. I've never done anything before except when I was like seven me and my brothers(probablly in there early teens) went to Big Bend and went up Mountain trails. I need fun things to do and locations to do them in. I live in TX so I need more ideas for the TX area. spring break road trip starting in colorado?

So me, my mom, and my best friend might be going on a road trip over spring break. We live in the Loveland Fort Collins area in Colorado. We have 3 days Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. We have already seen yellow stone, the Grand Canyon, and been to South Dakota 3 times. We need some ideas of a good three day road trip it can leave Colorado or even stay in the states. We don't have much money to spend so pricey outings like river boating and skiing are out of the picture. My friend is going to Glenwood spring as soon as we get back with her family and she doesn't want to go there 2 times in a row so does anyone have any ideas? What are some fun attraction to drive to in Colorado and the surrounding states like OK, NM, KS, NE,WY, UT,AZ, and IA. That would fill three days and have us home by Tuesday night.

I took my family on week long Colorado road trip of playing miniature golf courses. You obviously don't have that much time, but all the good ones are along the front range anyway.

ideas for road trip from NJ to cali and back?

5 of us all 20. want to see as much of what the country has to offer in 25 days as we can. going from june 20th to july 15th so far Nj to Nashville to St louis then a big gap of what to do. need to end up at grand canyon then vegas. my friends were thinking denver and salt lake city but we are hitting yellowstone and mt rushmore on the way home so i said we should hit them way back or maybe not at all since we'll be up north more? ive been to slc 5 times for skiing when i was younger but don't think it or denver is worth the stop in the summer unless there are landmarks nearby? any ideas for the middle of the country areas to visit like state parks, landmarks, or anything else to visit. also any cool stops we may have overlooked on route from vegas to san diego to seattle to yellowstone. were prepared to camp and such so anything goes.
