Can you please give me some constructive criticism for the prologue of my book?

Full question:

I hope you enjoy it. I have never attempted writing anything remotely close to a book before and I would greatly like to improve myself with your criticism! ------ People die every day. Children go missing every hour. Every second, there is always someone who is praying for the continuation of their time on this earth … even if prior to that very moment their faith suggested that there was no higher power. It seems a universal truth that when driven into a corner by the omnipresent figure of death … the last resort of every single being would be to give up their grip on whatever reality they held true to their heart and put their fate, wholeheartedly into the hands of any power willing to claim it. She did not wish herself on anyone or anything other than herself. She believed herself a burden. She could not seem to take a leap of faith … science was the only thing she knew she could count on for it had not failed her as of yet. When she was younger, she was told stories. Tales intricately woven together so seamlessly that she did not think she could distinguish the fact from fiction in them. That was before the time that she realised that when something seems so seamless (just as those stories were), it is often exactly as it seems. When she enquired about these stories to friends of hers … terrified that there may be at least a small grain of truth behind them, they answered that they themselves had indeed heard the stories to be true. This seemed enough evidence to prove to her small mind then that she should heed to the morals of the stories told to her late at night. From that day on … she avoided the woods. She hated the way that the eyes of the other students seemed to pierce deep into her skin. She hated that their stares made it seem like nothing was private … nothing was sacred. She hated how they made it clear that they thought themselves the better of them. Yet, perhaps what she hated most was that she would never be able to escape this feeling. She was doomed to reek of charity … they all were. The courtyard of the castle was pristine in its up keeping. Along the solid walls that bordered the north and south sides, apple trees grew tall, yet tame in every way. They all were of uniform shape, size, and height. She was sure that the headmaster would have ordered them to be a uniform color as well, if of course he could control such things. However, it was to her extreme delight, that no one can control the color and turning of the leaves. Around the time of her arrival at the castle, it was autumn. The trees were all turning shades of yellow, orange, red, and the like of which seemed to try to ward off winter with their brilliant warmth. It was also to her delight, that those who had been raised never in the face of discomfort, made their way inside the castle do their socialising and what have you. They seemed to take heed to the bitter wind and migrate like birds to warmer climate. She enjoyed the wind however. She loved the way it bit at her nose and stung her cheeks. It made her feel alive … or at least remind her that she was so. It also let her alone with the leaves. They never seemed to stop amazing her. The way that they all could come from the same tree … and turn out so differently. She believed them to be like children in that sense. She also loved the way that they were the only splash of color that seemed to brighten her day. The red trees seemed like blood, and the yellow like sun, set against the dreary gray of the castle. The castle was like that in every way, dreary. She did not try to deny that it was magnificent to the highest power, for it was. It was set perhaps in the most precarious position possible amid the mountains, yet it felt solid. It held large turrets and towers a many. Yet, they all seemed like daggers cutting into the flesh of the pure sky. The sky, the leaves, and the boy sitting next to her were the only reminders of home that she seemed to be permitted to keep. He was her solace.

Best answer:

Very good, in fact, better than good. Yes there is still work needed to be done, but mostly it's almost perfect. I would link the first three sentences together. 'People die every day and children go missing every hour with, every second, someone who praying to some ethereal being for the continuation of their time on this earth … even if prior to that very moment, their faith suggested that there was no higher power than the one they believed in.' Punctuation is missing in parts. 'science was the only thing she knew she could count on, for it had not failed her as yet.' 'to her extreme delight, that no one can control' - no comma needed. 'do their socialising and what have you.' - (what have you?) I suggest 'do their socialising and take their pleasures.' 'It also let her alone with the leaves.' - (very American) 'It also left her alone with the leaves.' 'It held large turrets and towers a many.' - You've gone 'olde English poetic', haha. Make more use of a line space between paragraphs. Would be great to see your finished work.

Australia's disneyland?

Full question:

I know it doesn't exist. I'm creating one as a hobby...and I know this doesn't go in this section, but I frequent here a lot, and I know this section gets more traffic than "Amusement Parks" So, let's assume Australia is getting a Disney Resort with two parks: A magic kingdom (Disneyland) and an Australian theme park "Australia's Downunder Adventure" or "Disney's Downunder Ad...etc" I need help deciding the names for the sections of my new park: Section one: The entrance. This is a courtyard with a huge flower display of the logo. It also contains miniatures of Australia's major icons. I'm thinking of making it like a "merging of times", past, present and future. It doesn't necessarily need a name. The Mountain of Dreaming (better name? suggestions accepted gladly): In the tradition of Disney parks to have a giant "miniature" of something, be it castle, tree or whatever, as the park icon, Downunder Adventure will have a large mountain with indigenous art and images of Australiana and Oceania sculpted into it. You have to walk through it to get to any of the other 5 lands. Now I need help with names: Land one: A dreamtime/ indigenous themed land. Paying respect and teaching people about the History of Australia's first people (usually through Showtime Spectaculars and demonstration shows). Land two: Outback/Romantic History of Australia: The farms, the bush. Shows and rides dealing with Australia's most prominent identity. Land three: DisneyQuest Interactive Park: a large building filled with interactive videogames. Land four: Oceania: A tribute to the other nations who inhabit the Pacific. Land five (or a segment of Land four): Convict Cove, will be a water park. Also a scale-replica of an early convict ship, which will serve as a Theatre-restaraunt of a pirate theme (you know which pirates). Land six (or 5): a zoo. People come to Australia to see our wildlife, and Australians love our wildlife. The Rescuers (a disney film) will feature prominently here. So, any name suggestions for my lands?

Best answer:

Section one: eternal times One land: the indigenous today they greet you. Land two: The History here exists also Land three: the electronics here overcomes the daily thing Land four: Oceania: the cross of the south marked our destination Land five (or a segment of Earth four): the Convict's Ensenada, we are This way us Land six a zoological park. Me Mister kangaroo invites you Entrance: If you don't know the south and thinks that it is the desert look well at that horizon will see a thousand open chains

Australian's are different. We are very patriotic, and more spread out. The problem with the Californian Adventure is the lack of theming. It just threw stuff in there. Something "home grown" would be more succesful here than something "imported". Also, I was thinking more of tourists than locals. People come to Australia to experience...australia.

Best answer:

EDIT: I think a Disneyland in Australia would be a GREAT location! I have never been to Australia, But would love to go there one day.... It sounds like lands one and two can blend from one to the other as you move through the park, you move through time and history, Land three DisneyQuest is usually located in Downtown Disney, Land four could be like Disneys second park in Japan, i've only seen pictures of it, it looks incredible. Land five again would be located near Downtown Disney but be a separate entrance if its a water park? almost sounds like the POTC. and the land six is like the Animal kingdom. I would love to see the wildlife of Australia. Keep up the good work, I would like to see your dream come true!!!!!! Really, where ever its built, I will love it! I just hope to be able to get to see anything in Australia one day...

Where should we go for our anniversary?

Full question:

We really like the mountains and feeling like magic could be possible. So, no big cities or amusement parks. We want to see castles, and be able to drive. Not to mention that we have a timeshare with RCI, so using that is a must. They have places all over the world though so its not difficult. Mostly, I have been looking in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, but I can't manage to decide between them. If you have had any magical vacations where the scenery was center stage and/or use RCI and know where a great resort is like that, let me know. We are planning it for our fifth anniversary in 2013 so we got time to here suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Best answer:

i would say scotland. it has breathtaking lakes and huge mountains with snow blankets. and it is easily transportable as you can drive around and discover. however i wouldn't think of a road trip as an anniversary trip, perhaps a cruise around the Caribbean or the himalayans. but still either way it sounds nice. :)
