Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

Anybody ever gone skiing at Crotched Mountain?

Full question:

I'm going there tomorrow. I'm a higher intermediate level skier- so I can handle any blues and easier blacks at easier resorts. What shoudl I expect?

Best answer:

Im pretty sure it is a easy place to ski at, i snow board and it was sort of easy for the blues havent tried any of the black ones yet. Have FUN!!

When will the ski resorts be less crowded?

Full question:

Crotched Mountain, NH New Years Day or the day after, which is on a weekend? We're supposed to get a snowstorm in the Northeast and it's supposed to be on the first and the second of January. So which day should I go?

Best answer:

both will be bad. People have work off anyway. Id go with new years day though. After a day of partying till sunrise, the first thing people may have in mind may not be snowboarding

What ski area have you been to that has the worst glades you have ever seen?

Full question:

I vote Crotched Mountain in NH!

Best answer:

Bristol Mountain,NY because they are non existent. The trees here are just densely packed forests which give you no room to move at all plus the floor isn't cleared out so you always hit fallen logs or stumps under the snow, the only good runs are the old logging trails that go up through the trees but most of them are roped off and you get your pass pulled for hitting them, plus just being in the trees anywhere is asking for it if you get the wrong patroller

Any tips for my first time skiing?

Full question:

I might be going to Crotched Mountain, NH. I'm a strong intermediate as a snowboard, but have only XC skied as a thing we did in school. I want to try skiing so I chose to go to Crotched Mountain because you can switch between skis and snowboards all throughout the day and it's really close. I'm going to try skiing and if I find out I like it, I will take a lesson. If I don't like it as much as snowboarding, I'm going to take a lesson on snowboarding. So, what should I do for a first time skier? I rollerblade and skateboard, too. Lessons suck, you waste 30 bucks on something you will never go back to. I've been confident on blues before taking any lesson, of course I would recommend it to anybody would already skateboards or surfs, or surfs.

Best answer:

Absolutely take a lesson before you head off skiing on your own. You'll enjoy it waay more. Would you suggest someone try snowboarding without taking a lesson first? Secondly, when you are renting skis, tell the rental dude that you're new to skiing. He'll be able to give you a softer more flexible ski, probably on the shorter side for your weight. I wouldn't suggest borrowing a friend's skis because when you're learning you may cross your skis alot and hack up your friend's skis, and your friend's skis & boots may not be for your ability or size, and the DIN settings on the bindings would be for their ability. Go for the green runs - the bunny hill is just too lame. Relax, enjoy yourself, and dis your boarder friends for taking too long to do up their bindings when they get off the lift.

What type of snowboarder would you consider me?

Full question:

I can carve on any groomed run on the mountain, I can handle easier moguls (single black diamond moguls that aren't the size of mini-vans and blue trail moguls, I can't do double black moguls or single black moguls the size of mini-vans. I also can do moguls under icy conditions, but I may fall once or twice) I can handle easier glades (anything at Crotched Mountain, Pat's Peak, my backyard, and Gunstock. Also, the two marked glades at Wildcat I can do) I like speed. I'm faster than my skier "buddy" who has been parallel skiing for 4 years. This is my 2nd season snowboarding. I've gone 6-7 times last season and about 10 times this year. Would you consider me middle-intermediate, high-intermediate, or low-advanced, or anything else? I can also ollie, tail/nose press, and do easy boxes and rails, but I prefer not too because my board is long so I use it for speed and powder. I haven't really encountered a steep mogul run, I look for them, but can't find them... When I say black diamond, pretty much handle everything at Wildcat NH, and anything at Cannon except the glades like DJ's tramline and Kinsman's glade.

Best answer:

Low-advanced, if you can ride switch, which I'm assuming you can do since you say you can ollie, press, and do some boxes and rails with a powder board. I just went to http://www.skiheavenly.com/ski-and-ride-school/learn-to-ski-and-ride/find-your-ability-level.aspx#advanced#Top and found out you're a level 7, which is the lowest level under advanced. I just came back from Cannon today and it is icy! I have no clue how you go down everything with that much ice! Did you go on a powder day with no wind or something? I know the other guy's wrong because high-level beginners don't do single blacks with moguls on them under icy conditions, unless they're suicidal.
