Questions and AnswersHere are common questions and answers relating to Deer Valley Resort... Snow Skiing QuestionsThe following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category: How much do Ski Instructors at Deer Valley Ski Resort Make?Full question:What about tips? Best answer:Im not sure how much there actually pay checks are for, but they make out very well on tips. Especially if they take the kids for a couple hours or the day, We're talking into the $100++ range. Is Deer Valley a good ski resort?Full question:I am going to Deer Valley in Park City, Utah this mid-winter break and i just wanted to know whether or not it is really worth my time or if i should be excited for it. Because i am a person who loves to ski, but only if the ski place i'm going to is actually good. Nonetheless, I want to know. Thanks! Best answer:I'll put it to you this way, its not the most technical or challenging mountain there is, but it is fun. There are a lot of long, sloping trails and some fun tree runs. You won't find any 15 foot cornices to drop, but the scenery is beautiful, and the different lodges are amazing. Not to mention it has the BEST food you will get at any ski resort anywhere in the U.S. Need fast tips for skiing at Deer Valley, UT?Full question:I'm in from out of state in Park City and would like to go to Deer Valley tomorrow. I need some tips: 1. I'm not able to pre-purchase lift tickets for some reason. Do you think tomorrow, Dec 30, the tickets will be sold out? 2. If it is sold out what is another good ski resort that has good beginner runs for my kids (just learning) and intermediate/advanced for me? 3. Any good kid-friendly restaurant(s) you can recommend at Deer Valley and in Park City in general? thanks! Also, which lodge should I go to (best access to ski shops and beginner runs)? Best answer:Be sure to visit Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Park City! It's a kid's dream!!!! How hard is it to get a job at a ski resort?Full question:i'm thinking about gap yearing at a ski resort... but i dont want to deffer my college and then find out i didnt even get a job... is it extremely competitive for ski resort jobs? i'm hoping for a job in alta snowbird or deer valley.. Best answer:Nope. It's not hard at all. The only jobs that require some experience are snowgrooming and ski patrol. Most people who run the groomers get trained after they have done some other operations job like snowmaking. Ski Patrollers can be hired with no previous experience if the applicant has medical training equivalent to an EMT-B or has an Outdoor Emergency Care certification. However a lot of Patrollers are volunteers. Instructors, Snowmakers, Lift Attendants, Rental Shop employees, Food Service workers, etc. etc. are all jobs that a new employee can be trained to do. Contact the Human Resources departments at the places you are most interested in working at. Most places have hired non-US citizens before and can tell you what paperwork you need. Which ski resort in Utah is better for beginning skiers and snowboarders-Park City or the Canyons?Full question:I am planning a family trip to Utah in December. We need to stay near/in Park City. Some kids (and adults) want to ski and some want to snowboard but most of them have never done either. Between The Canyons and Park City, which would be better all around for beginners (Deer Valley is out because it doesn't allow snowboarding)? Best answer:Park City. The majority of slopes at the Canyons are advanced terrain. Though I'd say Snowbasin is a better choice than either of those. It's cheaper and has far more begin/intermediate slopes than PC or Canyons. You are right--Deer Valley and Alta are better for beginners by far but neither allow snowboarding. What ski resort to stay at in Utah?Full question:I was looking to live in Utah for the year and work. ( Mostly play though, boarding/skiing, climbing, hiking) I am from Ohio. Just curious where people think they would most likely stay between snowbird and deer valley. Best answer:Snowbird and Deer Valley have limited accommodation actually in the resort, particularly if you are looking at staying for a year. Deer Valley in particular is quite pricey and Snowbird aint cheap. Park City is a bigger town close to Deer Valley (and a few other resorts). Salt Lake City is a proper big city with proper city facilities including year long rentals and is about 30 minutes drive from Snowbird (depending where in town you live, and subject to Little Cottonwood Canyon not being closed for avalanche control). I would think about those two options. best Mt. Hood area ski resort?Full question:I'm moving from Salt Lake to Portland. Keep in mind that Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Canyons, Park City Mtn, and Deer Valley are all within 40 minutes of my doorstep. Which resort at Mt. Hood offers the closest thing to Utah skiing? Best answer:Like Jim said, there's nothing here in Oregon that is close to the skiing you're used to in Utah. However, there is a lot of great cross-country and backcountry skiing at places like Crater Lake. By and large, Mt. Hood itself is a decent ski area, but it doesn't have the vertical or terrain you're used to. Assuming you're a pretty good skier, you'll probably get bored in fairly short order. On the plus side though, Mt. Hood is open for a good chunk of the summer, so you can get out and ski in the middle of July. That's not something you can get very often in Utah. Also on the plus side, Portland is actually pretty convenient to the Tahoe area. Its about 9 hours of driving, or a 1 hour plane flight from PDX to Reno. Ticket prices aren't bad. Plan ahead a little bit and you can get round trip airfare on Southwest in the $150 to $200 range. That's about what you'd pay for gas if you've got an SUV. What ski resort is better?Full question:Jackson Hole, Deer Valley, Taos, Squaw Valley, Vail, or Heavenly Best answer:I do not know your level of skiing but I prefer Jackson Hole. It has everything from interm. to DD. It is just such an awesome resort. If you go there sign up for the 100,000 foot club. Best Place To Ski In Utah?Full question:Hey, I've been skiing before in Wisconsin, have never fell off ski's in my life, but this weekend I'm going to Utah with my dad. We don't know if we should go to Brighton, Deer Valley, The Canyons, or Park City Resort. Were staying in a hotel in park city, and we plan on going to more than one resort. Please help me decide which resort would be best for me. I'm a beginner/intermediate but I don't want boring runs. I LOVE speed! Thanks! Best answer:Well, are you going to have transportation? If you're staying in Park City, obviously that mountain is right there, and Deer Valley is right next door. Both are pretty good mountains for beginners and intermediate skiers. Deer Valley also has some pretty decent tree skiing and the best food at any ski resort I've ever been to. If you will have a car and can get around, head up to Snowbird and Alta. Since you're still developing your skills, I'd stick with Snowbird for now. Its a great mountain, lots of varied terrain, and some good intermediate runs - also, lots of chutes, gullies, trees, etc. So you'll stay occupied. Which binding should I be putting on my new skis?Full question:I am about to buy the Line Prophet 100 in a 179cm length from a site that will mount bindings. They have a great selection and are currently on sale, so I figured I should wax 'em, mount 'em, etc. So my question is: what binding should a 5'11" 150Lb 14 year old skier be mounting to the Line Prophet 100? I ski everything, but where I ski often varies. I love Snowbird, ski, HIKE and handle all the powder there. I have a place in Deer Valley, so am stuck with the terrible groomers. I have friends who board and ski the Canyons, so will have to resort to bumps, which are not my specialty. I have heard the Marker Griffons are good because they are light when it comes to hiking at the bird. What are your opinions? Thanks in advance. Best answer:179 CM skis are defiantly too long for you, stick to a 170-175cm length. Which skiing is more of a challange?Full question:For the past few years a few friends and I have been going skiing in Park City, Utah. We've done most of the resorts in the immediate area (Canyons, Deer Valley, Park City Mtn.) .. Always had a great time - Although, I still have steered clear from the black trails out there.. Now this year we're changing it up and heading to Vail, CO. We'll be skiing Vail and Beever Creek. In comparison to Park City, what are we in for? Is Vail a more difficult ski trip than Park City? Haha, we'll if they are snobby to me i'll show then where i can stick my poles! But what about the faces/steepness and difficulty of the greens and blues in Vail, CO compared to the greens/blues of Utah.. Which State has steeper faces? I grew up on the east coast skiing VT mostly every year, and the west def. knows how to make me shake! Best answer:vail blows in a corporate "we want your money" kind of way. Its great if you can't ski very well and you just want to be seen. go to beaver creek... if you don't normally hit the blacks then you'll have all you can handle. I personally wouldn't go to any resort that vail has a hand in... they really were quite rude to my kids... at the time they were 8. what adults are mean to little kids on vacation? Vail and its employees want to be the best but are snobby about everything. stick to utah. Skiing in Telluride?Full question:I am going to Telluride in about 2 weeks. I am wondering if anyone can compare the skiing there to other ski resorts out west. I am most familiary with Deer Valley and Park City Utah. Are the runs similar? Any comparisons would be great. Best answer:Telluride is sort of two mountains - a steep side on the old town side, and a less steep side on the Telluride Village side. The steeps are comparable to or steeper than anything in Deer Valley. There is lots of cruising on the Village side. Warning - It is about 14 years since I skied Telluride, and longer since I skied Deer Valley. If they were big enough to ski. has anyone ever mountain biked at park city or deer valley resorts in utah? if so, any thoughts?Full question:which is better? any trail suggestions? Best answer:For a less tiring but still adventurous ride, take the ski lift up with your bike and bike down the mountain. Both resorts offer this as a one time or unlimited pass. Check the websites for cost. Both resorts are great. Which ski resort should I pick? Deer Valley, Vail or Beaver Creek.?Full question:I will be with my wife (both 27 years old). We are trying to decide between the three and where to stay. I would like to be as close to the slopes as possible and have a budget of $275 a night. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best answer:My take on the three - Beaver Creek positives quaint small compact pedestrianized ski village, negatives quiet nightlife Deer Valley, positives immaculately kept, short queues, Silver Lake is a real ski-in ski-out location, negatives expensive and dull at night Vail, positives big ski area (at least twice the size of the other two), lots of trail choice, Vail Village itself is a great place to stay, lively at night, negatives, can get crowded All 3 have good ski records, so wherever you go there should be lots of snow. My personal choice? Vail, because I hate early nights! What's are good lodging recommendations for a family of 4 (2 adults/2 tween/teen kids) in the Deer Valley area?Full question:Looking for a place for skiing over spring break and have heard great things about the skiing in Utah. Also heard there are other resorts around Deer Valley as well as great restaurants. I'm curious if people recommend a ski-in/ski-out vs. a place that's not necessarily close to the slopes. Also heard about Main St. area - is it better to be close to that area? Never been there so any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! Best answer:I have a house up in deer valley but before i got that house i stayed at the Black Bear Lodge. its perfect for what you're looking for.Its very close walking distance to the slopes and mainstreet is about a 2 minute drive from it. And it will fit your whole family comfortably. I loved it there and had an amazing time. Plus the skiing at Deer Valley is absolutely amazing, you'll have a great time!! hope this helped (: if you want extra info. on the Black Bear Lodge just google it.Many websites come up for it. The formula for NPV is (1-(1+i)**-n)/i Where to ski during the Sundance film festival?Full question:I found a good deal on airfare to Salt Lake City, so I randomly picked a weekend to go. Unfortunately, not only did I pick a weekend in the middle of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, I also picked a holiday weekend (MLK day). So, my question is, where would be a good place to ski this weekend to avoid the crowds? I figure Park City, Canyons and Deer Valley will all be slammed. Does that mean the rest of the resorts near the city will be relatively light? Or will everywhere be pretty much packed? Best answer:Sundance is a mixed bag. On one hand, the hotels will be packed with filmmakers and celebrities and not people coming into town for skiing. On the other hand, the celebrities and filmmakers still want to ski. Unless you ski the black diamond runs, you will most likely find the Park City-area slopes busy during the middle of the day. Also, Park City [downtown] will be extremely crowded, so if you go there, make reservations for restaurants and take the free shuttles and not your car. The other resorts in the SLC area should be average attendance. Yes, it's a holiday weekend, but that also means that a lot of the locals will be leaving town and not going skiing. Expect Saturday and Monday to be busier than Sunday. Afternoons are always lighter; some resorts offer free skiing after 3. Compute the after-tax NPV of the new lift and advise the managers of Deer Valley about whether adding the lift will be a profitable investment. Show calculations to support your answer. What subjective factors would affect the investment decision? Best answer:NPV= Net present value method. NPV is a way of evaluating projects on a parity basis by bringing all values to the present time. Determine for time zeros what the costs and benefits of the lift options. Costs=acquisition costs+operating costs+taxes+ maintenance costs+ ... Benefits=income stream + tax relief + depreciation Calculate the costs and benefits for time zero and then add them. Compare the projects and the one with the highest NPV should be accepted. If the NPVs are negative, the project should be rejected. Taos caved, but I haven't seen any news that would make me think these three now allow it or will anytime soon, especially MRG, which is on privately owned land.
