Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

Is there any cool secret runs in Marmot Basin? And I heard there's lots of caves, where are they?

Full question:

I've being to Marmot Basin many times, and still have lots of fun every time I go, but I was wondering if it has any nice secret runs that no one usually goes on. No harder black diamond please. Also, I heard there's caves all over. I was wondering where those are..?

Best answer:

Y! Answers isn't usually a good place to get info on stashes for any area. This kind of info is best found out by going to the bars and hangouts of the locals once you get to a particular area or by sharing a chair with an employee of the resort and making small talk on the lift. Buying a few rounds for some of the locals or making nice with the ski patrol (people who can also be bribed with beer) will yeild better results and they may actually invite you ski with them.

What is bigger? Silverstar in Vernon BC, or marmot basin in japer?

Full question:

Yes

Best answer:

Marmot is taller in both elevation (height above sea level) and vertical rise (measurement from base to highest peak) Though Silverstar has almost double the ride-able area, meaning the face of the mountain is essentially wider. Marmot may or may not have some slightly steeper diamonds than SS since the vertical drop is higher, but it may not necessarily be true since it's an overall measurement and not a slope-by-slope measurement. Also keep in mind trail ratings are based on the difficulties of that mountain alone, they can vary from resort to resort. http://www.skireport.com/alberta/marmotbasin/stats/ http://www.skireport.com/bc/silverstar/stats/ You can look up almost any major or common resort on that website, it's also readily updated with fresh powder amounts and locations.

Runs open Marmot Basin?

Full question:

Is Eagle East Bowl open yet or the knob chair. If not WHEN i cause im heading up there in like a week. Thanx

Best answer:

No, the Knob is still closed as of yesterday. They havent had much snow in the last week, but one more good dump should open it all. Kinda cold last week, as low as -42C. Enjoy.

Anyone done a ski instructor course with The Canadian Rockies Academy?

Full question:

In Marmot Basin, Jasper? Did you enjoy it? What are the pros and cons? Would you recommend it?

Best answer:

Sorry, I didn't go to this one. Over the years, the ones I've attended were sponsored by the instructor association or the ski school I was working for. I have attended an advanced group in the Seattle area which I really enjoyed. In most cases these are segregated by your experience and ability. The other candidates are usually close to your level and you will learn a great deal. Have fun. Who sponsors the group and for what purpose?

The following questions were posted in various Yahoo's categories other than 'Snow Skiing' - hopefully they are relevant:

Anyone work for Marmot Basin last season as a snowboard/ski instructor?

Full question:

Best answer:

Nope

whats the best run at Marmot Basin (in jasper, canada)?

Full question:

i think that its anything on Eagles Ridge

Best answer:

Well - It depends how bad you want to earn your turns so-to-speak. Eagles East is lift accessed and has a long cliff band that you can enter through certain points the ski patrol has created. You are fairly committed to leaving via the Rock Gardens area. It is fairly steep in there and sometimes wind effected. Not the greatest skiing... especially that you usually end up in the lower area and have to take 2 lifts to get to the top of Eagle East. But if you're looking for open & wide areas - you may have to hike for it. Depending upon your ability and confidence, and how much you like to hike, you can head to the Knob chair and when its open, hike pretty much to the top. That is- STRAIGHT up from the top lift station. This is a very direct route and usually, unless after a storm cycle, almost has 'stairs' kicked into the slope. The view from the top is fantastic on a clear day and can take anywhere from 45 to 70 minutes, depending how much steam you have, in hiking to the top. It is possible, depending on the conditions, snowfall etc to get 'first tracks' along the upper "Knob" area. Also - and this is a 'locals' secret- if you have the proper avalanche gear and smarts, you can head into "Tres Hombres" off the top of the Triple. NOTE: this is a similarly controlled area where you enter the Parks Canada boundary and more or less end up along the very lowest point of the ski area. The ski out can be somewhat flat and does have some signage, although it is VERY POSSIBLE TO LOOSE YOUR WAY, make a wrong turn and get into a lot of trouble very quick. Perhaps ask an experienced local to take you out here after checking in with the Ski Patrol atop the Triple. And - there's Cariboo Knoll. Its a bit of a hike which is is east of the Triple Chair line that is still within the boundary, although involves a hike and the right conditions to ski/ board through.. Good luck - check in with a friend, have the "10 essentials" for traveling in the mountains, a few Power Bars & avie gear.

why is there a graveyard in the bushes near highway 16?

Full question:

My friend and i just got back from snowboarding at marmot basin in jasper canada and we saw this really old grave yard that she said was from a whole bunch of kids that died at camp a longg time ago i was just woundring if any one nows what actually happend. It is kinda hidden in the bushes but you can still see it from the road.

Best answer:

Your friend was having some fun at your expense. It is very common for graveyards from a long time ago to end up being "lost" when the town they were associated with ceases to exist. All over North America if not the world there are small graveyards that were once part of farming towns that dried up, gold, silver, and other types of "rush" towns that went bust and other towns that for many reasons just went away. Well the people leave but only very rarely do the dead get pulled up and brought along.

What Jacket Specs should I need for Jasper snow?

Full question:

I am going to Marmot Basin for the upcoming 2009/10 season and need some help with what jacket specs (best: material, insulation, waterproof rating, breathable rating, core venting, pockets, seam taped, powder skirt, zip in compatibility, weight etc) i need in order to stay warm(or as warm as I can) on the slopes! I am from Australia and don't go to the snow so anything you can tell me would be awesome. Also should I get the jacket over here before i leave or wait till i get there? Any sites that sell good jackets at good prices? Any hints or tips on surviving the season there, would be much appreciated, not just jackets! THANKS!!!

Best answer:

don't go below 10K for breathability and waterproofing or you won't be warm on cold days some good sites for deals on good winter coats are dogfunk.com the-house.com sierrasnowboard.com i would wait till you get here and order it because shipping a coat from those sites might not be possible to australia, it might not be possible to where your going either and if thats the case you will have to go to a store to buy the coat also look at getting Under Armour Cold Gear Base 3.0 shirts and leggings, the difference is amazing when you where it, it definitely makes a difference in how warm you stay, i wear it all the time and i find myself sweating on days when its below zero out another tip for staying warm is don't wear anything cotton, you want to wear stuff thats fleece, if you buy under armour snowsports clothing you won't have to worry about this because they don't make cheap junk

What is Best size snowboard for me and bindings? and witch ones, height and Weight in post. 850$ budget?

Full question:

Hello. i am a new snowboarder, i can carve fairly well for only snowboarding for 2 days. i started doing backside 180s as im carving kind of slow. but i am picking up boarding very fast all my friends say. but i have been renting the shit gear. So i am about to spend 850$ on a new Board and bindings, i already bought my boots cause rentals suck. so i am good with those. here is the info i think you need. Ill be Riding at Marmot Basin in Jasper, Alberta and All other mountains around there when i get the time. Size Boots : 10.5 Burton Invaders My Weight is : 145 pounds My height is : 5 ft 11 Riding Style ATM: All mountain. ( Need something that if i want to try the park i can go and try and not fail cause my board. but need something that is good for carving and learning the basics but can transition into any part of the mountain) Budget 850$ you can also email at me tylerburden@hotmail.com so we can talk if you need more info. thanks.

Best answer:

Hey man, if I were you, i would look at the Technine Mass Appeal Snowboard.($350 new) It's great for free riding with your friends and rippin' up the park my man. Board size; I would go around 155-157 If you want to get more into riding the park, go with a few inches shorter, like a 152-153. Binding size, I would definitely go with a Large. I would spend up to $150 on bindings, it's a waste of money spending more than that, they're really all the same. Oh, and another tip: don't buy your boards from Tilly's or any other store unless you know how much the board you want is REALLY worth. They'll try to make the board seem so much better and over price you. So stay away from them. Follow my Tips: The Three S's. STYLE, SWAG, SKILL. Style: dress like a total bad ass. Got it? Bright blue pants, white jacket, red boots, etc. Swag: this also ties in with the style, make your outfit look fucking sexy. When you do a hard ass trick, make it look easy as shit. Skill: spend more time getting to know all the features of the mountain, like riding up snow mounts on the side of a slope, maybe doing a 180. Hit the terrain park more, it'll help you doing easier tricks on the mountain. Look for sweet deals on Craigslist too, some people sell amazing stuff for VERY low prices, so check areas around you for boards for sale. Keep shreddin' bro!
