Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen in 4 days?

Full question:

I am going to Nagano for New Year's holiday but can't decide on which snow resorts to stay. Nozawa looks like a unique Japanese experience but Shiga Kogen looks like a winter sports paradise. Is it feasible to stay 2 night at each place over the course of 4 days? Any idea how far in between are these 2 places and how much will the taxi trip cost? Thanks very much in advance.

Best answer:

Taking a taxi from Nozawa Onsen to Shiga Kogen costs 15,000 yen, distance is 50 km. It is not too hard but you can get more relaxed by fixing yourself only to Nozawa Onsen with authentic hot spring experience. For skiing, Shiga Kogen has more variation but it is not concentrated and you need make some small trip from one piste to another. Nozawa Onsen is more integrated. Please pay a biggest attention to the current situation, this year is very warm and less snow coverage.

Should I buy a 7 day JR rail pass or just pay per trip?

Full question:

I am going to Japan for a total of 8 days, arriving at Kansai airport and leaving at Narita airport. My itinerary is like this: Day 1 - Kansai airport to Osaka Day 2 - Osaka to Kyoto to Osaka Day 3 - Osaka to Nara to Kobe to Osaka, overnight train Osaka to Nagano Day 4 - Nagano to Nozawa Onsen Day 5 - Nozawa Onsen to Nagano to Tokyo Day 6 - Tokyo Day 7 - Tokyo to Hakone to Tokyo Day 8 - Tokyo to Narita airport Thanks for any help. :)

Best answer:

I totally agree with Allyson L above in that you will have to be running from one place to another, especially Day 3. JR Pass for 7 days costs you 28300 yen. Day 1 - Kansai airport to Osaka by a local train (1160 yen) Day 2 - Osaka to Kyoto to Osaka (540 yen x 2) Day 3 - Osaka to Nara (780 yen) to Kobe/Sannomiya (1210 yen) to Osaka (390 yen) The overnight train called Chikuma no longer operates, so you have to catch a 18:25 train from Osaka to get to Nagano at 22:39. It is the last train (with 2 transits) and costs you 11470 yen. You have an option to catch an overnight bus called Alpen Nagano-gou. It departs from Osaka/Umeda at 21:50 and gets to Nagano at 6:42. It costs you 6700 yen. JR Pass is not valid for the bus. Day 4 - Nagano to Togari Nozawa Onsen (740 yen) Day 5 - Togari Nozawa Onsen to Nagano (740 yen) to Tokyo (7970 yen) Day 6 - Tokyo Day 7 - Tokyo to Hakone/Odawara to Tokyo by a local train (1450 yen x 2) Day 8 - Tokyo to Narita airport (2940 yen) The JR Pass is for 7 days, so I suggest you start using it on Day 2. If you go from Osaka to Nagano by train on Day 3, the total amount of the lowest train fares from Day 2 to Day 8 is 30220 yen. This does not include any train fares for Day 6. With the JR Pass, you can avoid queuing for ages to get tickets. You can also go to Odawara by Shinkansen (35 minutes) instead of a local train (1.5 hour) on Day 6. If you opt for an overnight bus on Day 3, however, the total fare is 18750 yen. So, you might want to buy tickets as you go if you are on a tight budget.

(Japanese) Have I written this sentence right?
