hmmm. Maybe an hour away going west to Durango and then a little north is Purgatory at Durango Mtn Resort. Mid-sized resort and has some features but far from a Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mtn or Vail (these are close to 5hrs away). Telluride is about 2.5hrs away. Crested Butte and Monarch is maybe 3 or 3.5 hrs away. Don't like powder? Wow. You should actually go someplace with a lower elevation. Like anywhere in New Mexico or Arizona.

It's pretty easy skiing if you're an expert. The area isn't very steep at all, what they call a black is a blue at most ski areas in Colorado. Good tree skiing but you basically have to pole your way back out of the "expert" terrain there but if you're just a regular, intermediate or beginner skier, it's a GREAT area to improve your skills. The snow is always good and the people are friendly.

here are some suggestions for your beautiful area: canyon crest lodge pagosa lodge pagosa springs golf course or if you want to go with really rustic, the bruce spruce ranch. or you can go with the bed and breakfast route...there is "be our guest" bed and breakfast with rooms starting at about 79 a night or you can rent the whole top or lower half of the place for about 300 or even better the whole entire place for 600. that way you could have it all to yourselves. there is also the luxury bed and breakfast place..."the elkwood manor" they have several great wedding packages available.

Pagosa Springs gets TONS OF SNOW! There is a very good chance you will see a lot of snow at the end of December. I used to ski every year at Wolf Creek. The resort is about 45 minutes from town and is small but boasts "the most snow in Colorado". Snowmobiling is also a really fun thing to do. May seem intimidating at first but it's pretty easy and the guided tours are great. Ice fishing sucks. Snowshoeing is fun but exhausting. The town itself is cute, with some good restaurants and shops. You will be an hour East of Durango. More to do there in the way of shops and restaurants but I don't think Purgatory's skiing is very good especially compared to Wolf Creek.

I am taking a trip to pagosa springs colorado in the begining of march. I will be driving from albuquerque airport, about a 200 mile drive. I live in south louisiana where we never get harsh winters, so have no experience with northern driving. What should I prepair for?

It depends on how good your tires are, if they have at least half of the tread on them when they are new, then they are in pretty good condition for learning how to drive in snow. My suggestion to you is when you first find snow, get yourself into an empty parking lot without lightposts or anything that you could hit if and when you slide. Just drive and brake hard, accelerate hard, turn quickly and then learn how to recover from the skid. There is no better way to learn than to just do it because every car is different and the driving experience is dynamic. Just remember that when you are going straight a car tends to continue straight given the road isn't on a slant and you aren't accelerating or braking too quickly. When you turn make sure you are going a safe, controllable speed. Bring a shovel, a bag of sand or salt, and probably a sleeping bag in case you get stranded, although probably not likely in march of this year unless we get a snowstorm. I hope this was helpful.

im planning a july family trip to colorado. thinking about Creede, Pagosa Springs or South Fork. Which town is the prettiest and has the most activites ie. rafting, horse back riding and hiking? I also am looking for a small cabin for 3 nights that is around $85 to $100 a night. Any suggestions where to stay by the river?

I live in the Denver area but haven't been to any of the places you mentioned, (they are between 4-5 hours driving time from here), so I'm afraid I can't be of much help. With that said, I would choose Pagosa Springs because I read that there are about 25 waterfalls in the area that you can hike to. (I love to hike and I love waterfalls so I wish it wasn't so far from the Denver area!) Anyway, I actually have an article about Pagosa Springs that I saved from my AAA magazine, and from that, it sounds like you can do all the things that you say you want to do, and other things too. I guess there's also a place there called "Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park" where you can see and photograph native wildlife. The one thing I know about Creede is that there is a large and beautiful waterfall nearby called "North Clear Creek Falls", which they say is the most photographed waterfall in Colorado. I've seen pictures of it online and it looks really nice. From the mapquest website, I see that Creede is about 1 hour and 18 minutes from Pagosa Springs, so if you stayed in Pagosa Springs, you could still go to Creede and see North Clear Creek Falls. Anyway, have fun whatever you end up doing :-).

I'm in Castle Rock (off I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs), so a little north of you--well, alot north of you. I have a midwife who is actually in Colorado Springs. She see's people in Pueblo and further south too. I am due at the end of October. I don't know much about the hospitals and about doula's being present at the birth, but just wanted to let you know you aren't the only prego in Colorado. :)
