Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

Which ski resort in Utah is better for beginning skiers and snowboarders-Park City or the Canyons?

Full question:

I am planning a family trip to Utah in December. We need to stay near/in Park City. Some kids (and adults) want to ski and some want to snowboard but most of them have never done either. Between The Canyons and Park City, which would be better all around for beginners (Deer Valley is out because it doesn't allow snowboarding)?

Best answer:

Park City. The majority of slopes at the Canyons are advanced terrain. Though I'd say Snowbasin is a better choice than either of those. It's cheaper and has far more begin/intermediate slopes than PC or Canyons. You are right--Deer Valley and Alta are better for beginners by far but neither allow snowboarding.

What is the best ski resort near park city?

Full question:

I am a pretty advanced skier, but not expert. I enjoy black runs and harder blues. What is the best ski resort for me near park city (including sundance)

Best answer:

The other poster is wrong, Alta and Snowbird are about an hour from Park City in Cottonwood canyon, just outside of Salt lake city and they are true skiers mountains, lots of blacks and very few groomed runs. If you love really nicely groomed blues, then go to Deer Valley, that place is a amazing, beautiful resort inside and out. Other choices in Park city are of course, Park City Resort itself and The Canyons. I personally, would avoid the Canyons, not a fan and I think they suck. Was there two years ago. The setup is bizarre, lots of short, slow and old lifts with shorter runs.

What happens if you get caught using someone elses season pass at Park City, UTAH or any other ski resort?

Full question:

What happens if you get caught using someone elses season pass at Park City, UTAH or any other ski resort?

Best answer:

Pass will be confiscated, you are banned from the area, and could be criminally prosecuted for theft, or embezzlement, and possibly a criminal conspiracy to defraud the area( unlikely for a first offense). A lot easier and cheaper in the long run just to buy a day ticket.

is there generally any snow in Park City Utah in november?

Full question:

Thinking of going to Park City, Utah in November, about the week of Thanksgiving. Since we never see snow, we only would like to go if there was tubing, skiing , etc...available. Is Anybody familiar with this area that would know if its generally pretty snowy then?

Best answer:

I live in Utah. We should have snow in Park City the week of thanksgiving. We just had some storms come through and bring snow to our wonderful mountains that we have here. Sometimes we even have snow in the valleys on Thanksgiving. Hopefully we will get enough snow and it will be colder at night so the ski resorts can make snow and open up.

How busy is park city Utah over New years eve?

Full question:

I was thinking about a ski vacation over New Years. Just how busy is Park city over new years? I usually don't go this time of year, but an opportunity is knocking. Dates I was thinking about would be from Dec 27-Jan 3. Thanks

Best answer:

I was there last year, new year eve though the 4th. It wasn't so bad, there was room on the slopes for me and my friends. The lines were a little bit longer than usual but it was worth it. Had a lot of fun.

Can you return a Park City Mountain Resort Season Pass?

Full question:

I bought a season pass at Park City Mountain Resort and now I want to ski with the cross country ski team. I haven't been to get my pass, and the season hasn't started yet. Do you think that I could get a refund for what I paid for it? I bought it directly from Park City Resort. They don't say anything about it on their website and their operator is always busy. Any help would be great. :)

Best answer:

i think u would be able to return it umm next time ur there try going into one of the main buildings and asking them sorry only been 2 park city once=[

Looking into going to Park City utah from Dec10th-Dec 15h?

Full question:

How's the Snow in Utah's Deer Park, The Canyon and Park City around Dec10th time of year?

Best answer:

I've lived in Park City for the past 2 winters, and it's snowed around that time both years. Last year we had 15 inches, and I was out of town visiting a friend in AZ!! I'd say it's a good time to go price wise too- things tend to go up around xmas, but you'd be safe going that early..

Which has better terrain park, Park City Ski Resort, Or the Canyons?

Full question:

I am wondering Where I should go next year for skiing. I ski park all day and am wondering if the Canyons or Park City has better park.

Best answer:

My vote would be Park City. They have three parks this year,, two of which have their own dedicated chairs. The Three Kings chaird for the Three Kings Park, and Eaglet Chair for King Con Ridge. And then there is Kings Crown for the ENORMOUS jumps.

The following questions were posted in various Yahoo's categories other than 'Snow Skiing' - hopefully they are relevant:

What are the driving conditions from Salt Lake City, Utah to Park City, Utah like?

Full question:

I'm an 18 yr old college student planning on making the move from Riverside, California to SLC, Utah. I am a ski patroller out here in Southern California but the winter weather here must be nothing compared to Utah's. I snowboard about 4 or 5 times each week during the winter. I will be living in eastern SLC and driving to Park City Mountain Resort primarily. I drive a Toyota Tercel, FWD, Michelin X-Ice Snow/Mud Tires and I have a good pair of chains. Ive driven in plenty of snow and have had no problems because of my car's low center of gravity. Will I be alright?

Best answer:

You'll be fine. If you're going from Salt Lake City to Park City, you will be primarily on I-80, which is a major E-W interstate, it is kept plowed and sanded. I used to have a job that required me to travel between both cities and I never had a problem, except in Park City itself, where snow removal is a little more difficult, I never got stuck or slid off the road in several years of traveling there. Typically, the only ski resort areas adversely affected by weather are Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude, because they are narrow box canyons and you often have to wait for snow removal.

On Shaun White Snowboarding the only mountains available are Park city and Alaska. How do i unlock the others?

Full question:

I have done the intro with Shaun and his friends but when i go to destinations the only mountains there are park city and Alaska. Is there a way to get Japan and Europe?

Best answer:

To unlock the others, you need to play very well for each track in every mode Good luck!

what is the best place to stay in Park City?

Full question:

I am looking at booking a condo in Park City mountains. Need something close to the ski lifts. What do you recommend?

Best answer:

If you want to be in the center of PC, stay on Main Street - the Marriott or something of the like. If you want to ski one specific resort, there are condos available at each of the resorts www.deervalley.com or www.pcmr.com or www.thecanyons.com Also check out Craig's List saltlakecity.craigslist.org If you don't have $$$$ to spend, stay in Salt Lake City - Park City is only about 20 minutes up the canyon. And if skiing is your main activity, staying in SLC will be more central to more resorts - Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, Deer Valley, Canyons, Park City Mountain Resort - they're all within a 30 minute drive of downtown SLC. In downtown SLC, I'd suggest Little America, City Center Mariott, Hotel Monaco. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

How many runs will be open in Park city in mid-december?

Full question:

I'm going to park city, utah on december 18-23, 2008. On average how many runs are open around then? Will the snow this year around the time i go, be above or below average.I know its hard to predict, but could you guys take a shot at it. Thanks.

Best answer:

Utah weather can be unpredictable, but by that time the majority of the mountain will be open. in a worst case scenario at least 2/3 of the mountain will be open, and with about 110 runs, im sure you will be fine. You really cant predict how the snow will be. it can change daily.

Where can I go snowboarding or snowmobiling in Park City, Utah?

Full question:

My family and I are going to Park City, Utah.We are looking for activities to do like snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling for a 7 year old and a 13 year old. I've been looking all over the web and haven't found anything yet for a decent price. I am looking for fun things to do at an inexpensive price for children 7 and 13 years old within Park City.

Best answer:

Park City is the BEST for snowboarding and skiing! There is Park City Resort, Brighton, and one or two others the last time I went there. Check local fliers for snowmobile rentals.

How wide is the Hudson river between Battery Park City and Jersey City?

Full question:

I think the part of New Jersey that is directly opposite the Battery Park City is Jersey City, right? I am interested to know the width of Hudson river at that spot, i.e. how many meters or yards?

Best answer:

Google Maps features a scale (bottom left of map) so you can measure from one point to another. When I did it, I got one mile. However, if I remember correctly, statute miles and nautical miles are not the same so it will differ. To see if I was right, I scan the Internet and found "to connect New York to New Jersey using a vast compressed-air tunnel under the mile-wide Hudson River " so that proves the one mile estimate correct. Google Calc. 1 mile = 1 609.344 meters 1 mile = 1760 yards 1 mile = 5280 feet

What do i need to bring for a park city trip?

Full question:

I'm going snowboarding with school to park city in a couple weeks. can someone help me make a good thorough list of what i need to bring? and if you could make a DON'T FORGET section for things that are little but important. I'm going for 3 days of boarding and 4 nights. should $300 be enough for spending money, if the tickets are payed for? thanks for the help in advance!

Best answer:

Here's a list of what I would bring; 1. three days worth of regular clothing for cold days 2. jacket 3. goggles 3. snowboard 4. boots 5. ski socks 6. helmet 7. a beanie / winter hat 8. shoes / boots 9. PJ's 10. a balaclava / bandana 11. iPod 12. 2 under armors 13. 4 pairs of underwear 14. sweatpants 15. deodorant 16. gloves 17. sun block (it sounds weird but it prevents windburn) 18. Chapstick 19. Cellular device and of course the issue of money... you are going to want to put around 50 dollars aside for getting food and drank at the mountain they hammer the prices its insane. Then you have plenty of extra money for buying what ever you are planning on buying which is never that much unless your a shopping obsessed chickity. And also make sure you leave aside some money incase you brake or lose anything that is necessary for your trip (i.e snowboard, gloves, boots) Hope this helps Geoff

Best answer:

how long does it take to travel from salt lake city to park city utah?

Full question:

how long does it take to travel from salt lake city to park city utah? ans i know your going to say you have to have like the ditance and how fast but i mean at a general pace....

Best answer:

If you are in downtown Salt Lake City (Temple Square) going to Downtown Park City (Main Street), it will take about 40-45 minutes without traffic on clear roads. With snow on the roads, your speed will drop a lot going up Parley's Canyon (I-80). The closest part of Salt Lake City to the edge of Park City might only take 25 minutes in clear traffic, but the downtowns are a ways from the edges.

Full question:

Want to go hunting near park city but dont really know what to hunt. Dont want to spend too much money and I am relatively new. I was think about coyote or bobcat but I dont know if those are in the area. Thanks!

Best answer:

Coyote hunting is cheap comparatively. Just get a .223 Rem Savage Rifle, practice, practice, practice and then get your license. Oh yeah and get a electronic caller. They sell them for 50 dollars. You might want to read up on tactics a bit. http://www.savagearms.com/11f.htm need to buy scope too. I recommend a 4.5x14 Fullfield II Burris

What wax should i use at park city?

Full question:

im going boarding in park city feb 13-15. im wondering what wax is best to use. i have dakine and demon all temp wax, but i would rather use swix. im going to get to buckmans soon, and they have alot of swix wax, so if anyone can help please say something soon. thanks everyone!

Best answer:

wax is tempurature specific so check out what the weather is going to be and buy accordingly. It is usually a little warmer there than say east coast or colorado...but ya never know. buy a couple...swix will set you back some coin but I think it is worth it. And if you buy the wrong stuff dont worry beacause there are plenty of shops at the base. Believe me been there a dozen plus times. I get a floro, wax....again costs more but is worth it. Especiallly if it super warm. you have all temp wax so get something spring like...at least 32 degrees and warmer. If they get a storm and its cold you can just pick up somethingn there no problem

Can someone help me find the buses to take from Salt Lake City to Park City and back, on a daily basis?

Full question:

Can someone help me find the buses to take from Salt Lake City to Park City and back, on a daily basis? I'm relocating and will be working in SLC but living in Park City. Thanks all!

Best answer:

Where to find kayaking lessons in Salt Lake City or Park City?

Full question:

Me and my family are going to Park City for a vacation and I was wondering where we could find a place that taught lessons.

Best answer:

Well, I don't know where to learn about kayak in Park City, but I know where to have kayak lessons in Salt Lake City. I have a relative in Salt Lake City. He likes kayak very much. Maybe just like you. He told me that Rapid Progression Kayak School is a good place to learn about kayak in Salt Lake City (2142 South 200 East). He studied there and he said the courses there are more than just leaning how to roll. They are full of techniques and advice on how the river reacts and what you need to be prepared for once you are in the unknown wild and out of the pool. Hope helpful to you!

What is better Salt Lake City/Park City area or Denver/Silverthorn Area (Ski Area) regarding climate?

Full question:

I wanted to know if Salt Lake City/Park City was as dry of a climate as Denver/Silverthorn Area is? Also, if it is easy to get to the slopes from Salt Lake City drive-wise and if Salt Lake City is a nice place to live? Is it difficult to breath like in Colorado Springs,Colorado? I know it was hard to breath in the dry, mile high air and all my joints hurt. I am considering moving out there but wanted to know if it was worth it.

Best answer:

The snow in colorado is overrated. Everyone makes such a big deal out of our snow but there are better ski areas with much more snow in utah and montana. This year the base depth in a ski area in virginia is higher than the base depth in silverthorn. Utah is wetter snowier and colder, so ski there!

Should I get a rental car when visiting Park City, Utah?

Full question:

I'm headed out to Park City, Utah, to do some skiing. I have friends flying in from different cities at different times. We considered renting a van, but Park City seems to offer pretty good public transportation. Was wondering if anyone's been there and how good the free buses are for getting around Park City. Thanks in advance.

Best answer:

Hi. I just recently skied at Park City and I think that a rental car, although not necessary would be a good thing to have. I don't know if you want to explore more of the area (other mountains, such as The Canyons, Alta, Snowbird, etc.) but if you are just staying in Park City, the public transportation should be just fine. I noticed that they did have a good, extensive bus transportation system around the mountain, but if you are looking for a little more freedom, I would go with a rental car. If you don't really need that extra freedom and you would like to save some money, not renting would work.

how much does it cost to get highlights at beauty bar at park city center lancaster pa?

Full question:

i want to get highlights in my hair but i dont know how much it is im talkin bout the beauty bar in park city center lancaster thnx.

Best answer:

your best bet would be to call them and ask what their price are. generally i know in our salon where i work the prices usually start at a price and depending on the length of your hait and how many colors you wish to have put in the price gets higher. so you should call or even stop in because when you call they will most like give you the price that they start out at and when you get there if your hair is long it will most likely be higher that what they quotes you over the phone.

How much does a "possesion of alcohol in a city park" infraction ticket cost in California?

Full question:

How much does a "possesion of alcohol in a city park" infraction ticket cost in California? I got a ticket the other day for being in a park in possesion of alcohol in california. Im underage and was wondering how much it would cost if anyone knew? Please help. I need people to answer who KNOW, not THINK they know, or guess.

Best answer:

If you were cited for a violation of Business and Professions Code section 25662 (possession of alcohol in public by a person under 21), your big problem is not the fine (which would not be more than a few hundred dollars). It is that conviction carries a 1-year drivers license suspension or a 1 year delay in getting your license if you don't have one now. You would probably want to see if there is a program available which would allow you to avoid a conviction (and thereby avoid both the suspension and the fine). If you are cited for some local ordinance, then we need to have a different discussion. (BTW, no citation, other than parking, has a fine printed on it in California.) I got your private message, and here is the different discussion. Local governments cannot legally regulate the possession of alcohol, even in city parks. It you go to court and ask to have this charge dismissed, and give the following citation to the judge, he will have to dismiss the charge: People v. Ramirez (1994) 25 Cal.App.4th Supp. 1. (Local government can regulate consumption, but not possession.) However, this might be dangerous if you are under 21, since a prosecutor could amend the charge to B&P 25662, with its license consequences which are not applicable to violation of a local ordinance.

What can u do in Park City, Utah? is there anywhere good to shop?

Full question:

Im going to Park City, Utah July 4th. Is it funn there? what can u do there? do u get good calling? Where is there shopping thats good? PLZ HELP! anything would help! alot! thnx!

Best answer:

I might see you there (jk) There are LOADS of places to shop in Park City but the one I recommend is Tanger Outlet. It is an outlet mall outside of Park City (near the walmart in Kimball junction). Its high-end stores (9 west, Levi Straus, etc) on a budget. A lot of the shopping IN park city is very expensive (inculding dining), but I guess that depends on how much you are willing to spend. Park City isn't very car friendly so park at the VERY top of main street in the parking garage or lot and just walk down Main street and window shop. Park City golf course also has very good fireworks shows. They let you basically just hang out and do whatever on the golf course and the show usually starts around 10:00, but get there by 8:30 for good pick of the lawn. There is also the Alpine Slide, coaster, and other carnival-like things at Park City mountain resort.

I live in Kellog, MN. We have a small city park that has a tennis court and a basketball court. We would like to take out the tennis court and put in more basketball courts with adjustable basketball rims for younger and disabled players. The city government has agreed all we need is the financial backing and/or the physical help to do it.
