Columbus was the best choice for Mike Peca. Beleive it or not. He will get the most ice time with the Jackets rather than the Rangers or Leafs. Rangers hardly have any cap space left. Leafs just brought Blake And Bell Aboard. So not much room on either team to bring in Peca. Columbus needed him to fill in the spot of Svitov after learning he would be going to Russia (or sweeden, cant remember) So i think its good for Peca, although i would have liked to see him sign with the Leafs cause they need PK help badly.

That is a bit of a pickle. The filter is supposed to only allow the upper part of the spectrum towards infrared in, but your camera sensor has a IR coating on the sensor (for various reasons) That leaves you with such a small band of the spectrum that it becomes almost impossible to get a decent pic. Best to check the exposure meter of the camera, but be prepared that it is going to be very long exposures, with huge f/stops.

His return, and Colorado losing two of their "go to" guys improves their chances of finishing ahead of Colorado. I think with LA's porous golatender situation, and Chicago's injury problems and Edmonton just being pathetic in regulation, I think that Columbus can finish ahead of them as well. However, with Phoenix's resurgence (and I've said all along, the right goaltender can save a team - Phoenix got Bryzgalov and it is working wonders - LA has a solid D corps and good young forwards but their lack of a big time goalie is hurting them), I still see Columbus as an out of the playoff team. They are battling Phoenix, Nashville, St. Louis, and Minnesota. My August Prediction was as follows 1. Detroit 2. Anaheim 3. Calgary 4. San Jose 5. Vancouver 6. Colorado (whoops) 7. Dallas 8. Minnesota 9. St. Louis 10. Los Angeles 11. Chicago 12. Nashville 13. Columbus 14. Edmonton 15. Phoenix So, take out Colorado from that list, and move Minnesota and St. Louis up one each, and I still think my early season predictions are looking half decent. His career almost ended once before because of a concussion. I love Peca and remember watching him in Buffalo when I was little, but now that he's broken his tibia just below the knee and done damage to his ligaments as well, and factoring in his age, is this the end for Peca, or will he still bounce back?

I hope not. But the guy has taken quite a pounding over the years and this one will be very difficult to recover from. I think the Leafs saying 3-4 months is beyond optimistic. I hope that's the case, but Rob Ray said after last night's Sab's game that he wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the end for Captain Crunch. Unfortunately for hockey fans in Toronto, the club's philosophy is not based on winning. For years, and I mean long ago, befre Ballard even, the idea of a successful franchise was a butt in every seat. THey have not progressed beyond that. As the Air Canada center is always full to capacity come game time, winning is not a priority. The Maple Leafs will not amount to much as long as the box office is successful. When the attendance starts to decline then you will see a much improve team on the ice with a possible win in the playoffs. Got to get those @ss in the seats. For now they concentrate on making money.

Still no word as of yet. I think NY is his first choice but the signings of most of their core players and adding Gomer and Drury, leave little cap room for a Peca. Probably coming down to chance at a cup or more money. I think Peca would go for the Cup. JMO. Would I want him? Hell yeah. Thats just that much more depth and grit ,especially on specials. I'm not saying it's true and I really don't believe it (info came from my mom's crazy friend who's in love with Lindy Ruff...) Peca would prefer to play in Toronto. The Leafs are just trying to get their house in order to give him another contract. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sabres are in a damage control mode at the moment and signing an old favourite might take some of the heat off management from last weeks disaster. Alas, me thinks the Sabre fans are smarter than that. Peca isn't going to replace Drury or Briere.

Well as a fellow leaf fan (presumably you are one too), I would also like to know what's going on. I know he's getting a little older and all that, but he was such an amazing defensive player. The only article I could find since the season ended regarding peca was in the ny post which said the isles had interest in him, but that was a month ago. I guess anything goes...

What do the Leafs do for next year? First, they have to get a new deal with Sundin or pick up his option. Even then, do the Leafs still want Sundin? Is it time for him to move on? The Leafs also have to decide of they still want John Ferguson Jr., something that many Leaf fans say no to. If you were the GM, what would you to make the team better for next year? I look at this team, and I think the Leafs are in a very bad situation, where they need to get rid of many players, but can't because in a few years, they'll be good (ie Steen, Stajan, Pohl etc). The Leafs have found new life with Antropov and Devereaux, and I think we should take a good look and getting Peca back. Goaltending must addressed. Raycroft and Aubin are on their way out most probably, and rumours have it that Mikka Noronen is on the radar screen. It also raises the question, do the Leafs want to make the playoffs next year, or do they want to keep building for the future?

As a big Leafs fan myself, I ask myself those same questions every day. Now first off, im dissapointed they didn't make the playoffs this year, because I truley bleieve they are better than the Isles. It's a shame it came down to a shootout to decide it all. First off, JFJ. I personally think he shouldn't be the GM, however, I strongly believe he will be the GM next year. The only reason he will be there is because he brought in lots of young guys, and gave them a good coach in Maurice. JFJ's downfall was giving McCabe and Gill all that money, which he could have spent on a goal scorer, which was what the Leafs were missing all year. Hopefully he lets Gill go to clear some space, because with White, Coliacovo, and Woz, we wont need gill. Next, Razor. Raycroft was a gamble this year which didnt work the way they wanted it to work. By giving up Raask they put all theyre hope in Pogge, who isnt even doing good in the AHL. If I was JFJ I would try and dump Razor and Maybe trade one of our D-Men and something to the sharks for Nabokov. Because soon with Toskala, Nabby might become avalable. If not Razor might get another chance. Lets just hope if it does come down to the final few games again next year, that he doesnt wet himself again. Now all your questions about Mats and peca and Nik are gonna get answered here. Peca was great for the Leafs until the injury, now if the leafs wanna sign him again, I think they cant go higher than 2 million a year, because he's getting older and you never know. if they can gett him cheaper, i would go for it. Now the leafs have lots of young talent, ie. Coliacovo, white, tlusty, pogge, antropov, poni, Nikolai Kulemin, Dmitry Vorobiev, Suglobov. So they have a good core, and i hope they make some trades for higher picks because if they can add to theyre existing core, they could be like the Oilers or Sens, and that can put us in a good situation for a long time. Which brings me to my next point, which is Mats Sundin. Being my favorite player, it saddens me to say it, but I think it's time to say good bye. I mean if were gonna pay him 4 mill it's ok, but for 6 million, it's just too much. Smart thing to do is trade him for a high draft pick, then go out and sign Smyth or Briere and make them your new franchise player. Next year the Leafs need to keep re-building, but they need to put a team on the ice that can win and make the playoffs. Like this year if we had a scorer and a better goalie we would have made it. So basically, use they young guys, keep on building, and slowly bring them into the team and instill them as a full time player so the team can gel together. Also move mats and bring in briere and Nabokov and I truley believe you have a 6th place team for the East right there. What are the chances that Columbus will make the playoffs?

I don’t know how you want to quantify this. I guess that it comes down to 2 questions: 1)will they win the division (automatic slot)? 2)Will they have enough points standings to be better than 7 of the 15 teams in the Conference who WON’T make the playoffs. My initial comments: Detroit isn’t as strong as they used to be, but they are the favorite to win a division that is the weakest in the West. However, Nashville will not finish as well. Chicago has improved. The Blues have a new coach w/ a whole year in front of him to make a difference and they did make a few off season improvements. I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think that Columbus is getting better. (has NOTHING to do w/ Peca; I’ve thought this for awhile). Again, I don’t know how to quantify it. I guess let’s put it this way … arbitrarily … is it BETTER or WORSE than 50/50 chances to make the playoffs?

there are three things that could keep them from being better than 50/50. 1. Nash's health... they only got better last year when Nash came back. If he can stay healthy, they have a chance. 2. Federov's drive... Federov has been pretty much a non-producer since leaving Detroit for the sun in So. Cal and doesn't appear to have much energy to do anything except play for a few minutes and collect a monster paycheck. 3. Goaltending.... How effective are Leclaire and Norrena in the nets? If they play like their last few netminders, Columbus will have a hard time winning games to make them even a lowly 8th spot contender. The blue line looks a lil young, the only playoff experiece i see there is Adam Foote, but as far as winning 40 games, which may be the deciding factor, i would say you will need to make sure that your team stays healthy and maybe get some key pickups midway through the season for that final push

This is the first have seen or heard about this. Is there video available yet? I wasn't able to find it on YouTube. Was it during play or after a whistle? Was he discussing/debating a call or was he coming up the boards and bumped him? Speaking as an official, if he intentionally initiated contact the suspension should be severe. That is a criminal act in most US states and is treated in the same manner as striking a police officer. Not having seen it, I am reluctant to offer a solid opinion about the situation. Most professional leagues have very strict policy regarding "avoidable" contact with their officials. How many times to you see a baseball manager suspended for accidentally bumping an official during an argument regardless of whether they did it intentionally and regardless of whether the umpire was actively engaging in the argument. If you have video, I would love to see it. Jared: First game of the season or game 7 of the finals, the league has an obligation to protect it's officials.

Anyone know why Michael Peca signed with the Blue Jackets versus resigning with the Maple Leafs? Why didn't the Leafs resign him? Peca took some of the draws, and was a major component to the PK. Who will take the draws now, Yannic Perreault has been traded to Chicago.. so will Sundin take all the draws? I wonder if it's because Peca has been hurt, like Lindross last year, and Toronto doesn't want damaged goods... buy why not resign him? He's a bargain under a couple million?

Have to agree with Chris on the GM being an idiot =D Peca Chose Columbus because out of those 3 teams, Columbus was where he would get the most playing time. And if it did actually come down to a money factor. Well JFJ should have given him what he wanted because of his impact on their PK unit last year. And Columbus were more desperate for him because they lost Svitov. And well.. they needed to fill the gap up quickly. Perrault was pick up, not traded, Antropov can take face-offs too. They might try and help Steen get better at face-offs but i doubt it...

Do you pay attention to the cap situation at all? They don't have a chance in Hell of signing either of these players. They have their own RFA's to worry about. PS: Your defense is not underrated. Its simply sub-par, and will be your achilles heel come playoff time. That is unless Lundqvist plays lights out again like he did last year. Oh yeah, they'll have him to worry about next year, so I wouldn't bank on anymore signings.

Does Peca still got game? In terms of desire and defensive tenacity - yes. In terms of staying healthy? That's a big question for a guy who's been injured recently like he has. He plays a lot bigger than his size (~190 lbs) so cumulative wear and tear is a factor. Will he put up points? He'll probably get 8 - 14 goals an chip in 15 - 25 assists. Not great production but his value on the PK outweighs his value on the PP. Can he help the Blue Jackets mature? Yes. And for this alone, he has major value. He'll become a leader in the locker room and will help instill some pride and traditions to this team. Similar to what Andreychuk did in Tampa. Also look for Columbus to ship him around the trade deadline for a high draft pick or a blue-chip prospect if they aren't close to making it in to the playoffs.
