Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

How is the snow situation in Revelstoke BC at the Ski resort?

Full question:

I would like to know how is the present snow situation for skiing and boarding in Revelstoke BC at the Revelstoke Ski Resort? Is the snow good or any parts icy/ how is the lower portion of the mountain? Plenty of snow? would I need a raincoat at any portion? Thank you

Best answer:

I haven't been there, but based on the snow report; http://www.onthesnow.com/british-columbia/revelstoke/skireport.html# It hasn't snowed in a while, but the base has a base of 46inches, and the top it's 72inches. Both are pretty good. Maybe a little low for this time of the year, but still good. They're reporting packed powder, so I'd say it's not awesome, but it's probably fine. Looks like over the next week the base temp is 0-4C, probably don't have to worry about rain

What 2 ski resorts would you rather go to Whistler or Revelstoke BC?

Full question:

What 2 ski resorts would you rather go to Whistler or Revelstoke BC? For 3 days of skiing in February, for all you who been to both what are your reasons for your choice? What are the pros and cons to each of them. thanks

Best answer:

If you want the ambience of an artificial ski village, prices that will make you puke, and a hill full of bloody tourists, Whistler. If you want some of the best lift serviced skiing in the world, friendly locals, and the down-home feel of your moms' kitchen, Revelstoke. Whistler is a destination, Revelstoke is an experience.

What would you recommend as best place to ski in BC Canada?

Full question:

Like a suggestion of good place to ski in BC Canada Regards length of runs. Quality of snow Level Of terrain Not so much concerned with village nearby More less the actual skiing I been to whistler and revelstoke so far What other ones do u all recommend Or do u think I should stay with revelstoke? Thanks

Best answer:

I am a fan of Sun Peaks, although if you like Revelstoke you may find most of the mountain a little tame. My problem with Revelstoke is that it has huge vertical but not a lot of width, so you end up skiing the same few runs to the bottom of the gondola over and over again. Fernie has some wicked terrain. Not as much vertical as Revelstoke, but a lot of bowls and glades as well as cut runs. It is a bit lower than most so is occasionally susceptible to rain. I haven't skied Red or Apex but hear good things. Big White is a bit ho hum, except for the cliff area which is a steep bowl. I would give Fernie a shot.

Where in eastern BC should I ski?

Full question:

I'm skiing Big White, Revelstoke and Lake Louise next month. What is another area I should ski at along that route and why? Thanks

Best answer:

This clickable map should help you pick some places. The only places I've skied in BC are Red Mountain (while I was briefly living in Spokane) and Whistler-Blackcomb. I've always heard that Kicking Horse and Fernie are really good.

How does one afford to live in a place like Revelstoke, BC?

Full question:

I would like to find a way to live and work and move to Revelstoke, BC? How would I be able to afford to live there.

Best answer:

Yeah..i wouldn't Move there if i were you...job opportunities are almost nonexistent. And the only good thing about the town is its ski hill in the winter. My aunt, uncle and cousins are moving from there to Kelowna (where i live) to get away from it, because its so limited. Theres no universities or colleges, no shopping (like actually, they have to go to calgary or kelowna just to get some basic stuff like clothes), they get a shit load of snow (no joke, you don't know snow till you've been there) and doesn't have very nice landscape other than the mountains nearby.

Things to do in Revelstoke?

Full question:

I'm 15 and I don't ski or snowboard. What is there for me to do in Revelstoke by myself?

Best answer:

I don't know what your tastes are but there is a really cool museum there. It's called the Nickelodeon. It's the only mechanical instrument museum in Canada. There are a lot of things there that you won't see anywhere else. I highly recommend it. My kids loved it. I know there is also a train museum of some sort but I haven't been there. There is more to do if you can drive around. If you are stuck in Revelstoke and walking, there isn't a lot.

How to face bears, and is it important to have a bear pepper spray?

Full question:

We are going on vacation through Jasper, Whistler, Kamloops, Kelowna, and Revelstoke. What is the possibility of facing bears in these areas, and does the bear spray work well ?

Best answer:

While it is reckless to venture into the woods without an adequate firearm for protection, bear spray has been shown to be more effective than a firearm in quickly stopping bear attacks. I'm not local to those areas so I can't say how likely you are to encounter a bear. Keep your eyes and ears open an try to avoid bears at all costs. Many "experts" tell people to play dead when approached or attacked by a bear. This is wrong. Bears eat dead things. Never run away! Walk away slowly and calmly. If the bear charges you'll have to spray it. Hopefully, you'll be upwind so the spray doesn't get blown back at you. .

Whats the right length of snowboard for big mountain riding?

Full question:

I'm 5'11 160lbs and have a 155cm ride kink twin park board that wont be any good for me on a big mountain in powder. I will be going to Revelstoke BC next month and was wondering what size snowboard i should get. I was thinking 164-165cm. I usually only ride rails and jumps so I've never had bigger than a 155.

Best answer:

look from any where from a 160-165. The bigger the board the more float and more speed. Usually the deeper the pow the bigger the board. Like a snowshoe they don't sink because of how wide and long they are!

Winter tire size for a Grand Cherokee LTD?

Full question:

Hey Everyone, I know nothing about tire size or the numbers. Could anyone help me out? 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, going with Blizzaks. I live in Golden, BC and will be driving to Revelstoke and Lake Louise all winter. For those of you who don't know, its avalanche country, so I need awesome winter tires to go along with my chains. Thanks Everyone.

Best answer:

Look on the inner doorjamb, it will tell you the stock size of tire there. Use the recommended size on the manufacturers sticker. By using the recommended size of tire it specifies it will most likely have the proper speed reading on your speedometer, and the ABS will work correctly if it has ABS.

Where are the best cities in British Columbia to live?

Full question:

This is a list of the cities where there are job opportunities for me...I have to specify which cities I'd prefer to be located in : Prince George Fort St John Dawson Creek Smithers Kamloops Nelson Cranbrook Golden / Revelstoke 100 Mile House Burnaby New Westminster Nanaimo Terrace

Best answer:

What is your criteria? What aspects are most important to you? Weather is important to me so I would immediately take all the northern cities off my list. I would also prefer to be near interesting places to explore so would enjoy living in Nanaimo with nearby access to Victoria with parliament buildings, shopping, antiques and access to Long Beach on the west side of the island. Burnaby and New Westminster are close to Vancouver with all of the amenities of the big city.
