Taking a family camping trip with a tent to Salida CO. We would like to do some fishing, hiking and possibly some horseback riding.

Hecla Junction is a great area to camp near Salida. It is off the main roads and set up against the Arkansas River. The fishing there is great and so is the scenery. It is managed by Colorado State Parks, so there is a fee to stay. The tent pads are large and level. There are also pit toilets which are nice when camping with kids and ladies. If your looking for a whitewater rafting adventure check out the Bighorn Sheep Canyon section of river just downstream of Salida by an hour. It is much more exciting and far less crowded than Browns. Salida is sort of in the middle of no where and there's no airport really close to Salida. You can fly to Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, or Oakland and all will be about 1.5 hours driving from Salida. Or you can take the Amtrak Train. It will stop very close to Salida. From Long Beach = From transit center in downtown Long Beach, take the Blue Line until it ends (middle of Downtown LA) Transfer to the red line, go just an stop or two to Union Station At Union Station you will board an Amtrak bus that takes you over the grapevine. Then you transfer to an Amtrak train. Another option: From the Long Beach airport, I think you take Jet Blue directly to Oakland airport From the Oakland, I think you can take the Bart rail to Stockton Stockton is going to be maybe 35 minutes from Salida But there isn't any bus service, so hopefully your friend can pick you up!

Right now I plan on rafting and checking out Great Sand Dunes National Parks. I see there are many other parks around there. What should I be sure to see within a 2, 2.5 hr drive from Salida? Thanks!

When you go to the Great Sand Dunes National Park...go EARLY...gets mighty hot later in the day. Then, you should go into Salida and go to the hot springs swimming pool or the other hot springs near Salida....or spend the nite in Salida and go the next day. Another great place to go is the Royal Gorge, just outside Canon City. See map and site below about this. Then, Colorado Springs is only 2 hours from Salida....a gorgeous city at the foot of Pikes Peak. You can visit the Garden of the Gods, Mining Museum, Air Force Academy, Seven Falls Old Colorado City, Manitou springs...need to visit at least overnite, maybe 2 days. You will LOVE Colorado...hope yu have a great vacation.

there are some(lots) in the south platte areas to the east of the ark drainage and tons down in the black canyon of the gunnison. though not multi pitch if you haven't been to penetente canyon south of salida(near del norte) it is very cool, really nice rock there and some cool routes. near colorado springs there is tons of stuff as well, drive a ways farther and the list grows enormous very fast......

Give yourself a few hours, it is actually really really cool there. While in Fort Collins, you can check out Estes park and Rocky mountain national park, about 45 min west of there and you not regret the view and the nature. Also while in Fort Collins, take a quick trip to Loveland and visit Benson park it is west of 287 on 29th ave, right across the Street from Loveland High school. It is a sculpture park and you will love it. That is if your into nature and art. Either way, enjoy your stay in Colorado and have a good time.

How about right here in Central California. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are very close. If you come here in the valley during summer, it can be very hot though. Try 120°F on a good summer. But on a more serious note, Oregon is very, very nice around the middle of spring through early fall. The rest of the time it rains there.

I don't know what you do, but try looking at the Modesto Bee for jobs in your field. Set up an interview and come check it out for yourself. There are lots of good things about Modesto. The people, the early Spring, the attitude are some of my favorites. Salida is a much smaller town and while I really like the feel of it and the fact that it's only a few minutes from Modesto, it may be too quiet for you coming from Sac. Good luck.
