Questions and AnswersHere are common questions and answers relating to Salt Lake City... Snow Skiing QuestionsThe following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category: How do people hike in Salt Lake City?Full question:I just moved to Salt Lake City surrounded by these beautiful jagged peaked Wasatch Mountains and there is absolutely no way to get to them! They're fenced off or blocked off by people's yards. I hear people talking about trails all the time in SLC but I think they go to Park City and I can't go there. I don't have a car and these stupid buses don't go anywhere near the foot of the mountains. How on earth do people hike in Salt Lake City? Are any of these trails accessible by bus? Best answer:Try C list for a local hiking group or do it the old fashioned way and walk. Questions from Other CategoriesThe following questions were posted in various Yahoo's categories other than 'Snow Skiing' - hopefully they are relevant: Purple geometric shapes when flying over Salt Lake City?Full question:Both times when I flew into/out of Salt Lake City, I noticed large, purple geometrical shapes around the lake from the plane. I have never acutally been to SLC, only used the airport as a layover, so I am not familiar with the layout of the land. Any idea what type of landform I am looking at from the sky? Or is it just the way the water appears? Best answer:They're probably the salt evaporation ponds, where they evaporate salt out of the Great Salt Lake. They are usually rectangular, and can be anything from a blue to a purple color. If you saw patches of red in the lake, those were brine shrimp like someone else mentioned. How is driving from Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole?Full question:We are planning a trip to the Grand Tetons, and it would be cheaper to fly to Salt Lake City, Utah, and drive up to Jackson Hole in Wyoming. Does anyone know how the drive is? Is part of the highway dangerous/up in the rocky mountains (like with a cliff on one side)? My worried mom wants to know. Thanks Best answer:I live in Salt Lake and have made that drive many times. It is actually quite pretty and very safe. You are on interstate for about half of it, and 2-4 lane highway the rest. The closer you get to Jackson you will be more wooded, but no cliffs. Tell mom you will be fine. :) Here's a quick breakfast tip as well. Jedediah's House of Sourdough for sourdough pancakes. I don't like pancakes and would drive to Jackson for a stack. Have fun on your trip. What is the cheapest air ticket from salt lake city to seattle, washington?Full question:I am looking for the cheapest price to go from salt lake city to seattle washington. Do you know which route and the price for the travel? I appreciate your help. Best answer:The price of air tickets depends on various factors like traveling dates, departure airport & flying time. The also you can follow some easy tips to get the cheapest air tickets. You should try to take less busy airport, avoid weekends (more costly then weekdays) & should fly on early morning or late night. Then also I would like to suggest an online travel portal to book your air tickets at very cheap and affordable rate. It would definitely help you. places to visit in yellowstone and salt lake city?Full question:We are planning for a 4 day trip to salt lake city and yellowstone. Would like to know the best places to visit in and around. Also we will be driving from Salt lake city to Yellowstone, so any suggestions on lodging? Best answer:Yellowstone is terrific. If you can, stay at the Old Faithful Lodge. Nothing like having breakfast and having a geyser go off in the window. Staying in the park will enhance your experience greatly. (see below) The National Park Service is very helpful when it comes to picking stops. The park roads are something of a figure-eight. We did the top half one day and the bottom half the other. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must, and so are the geyser. And if you like hiking, there are plenty of suggestions. Temple Square is definitely worth a visit. Sundays, the Mormon Choir tapes a television show that is open to the public. Definitely worth your time if it works for you. The city is amazingly clean. If you can travel a bit out of town, check out the Kennecott Copper Mine, which is stunning in a very unexpected way. (You can see it from space -- it's that big.) How to go from Salt Lake City international airport to downtown SLC by bus?Full question:how to go from Salt lake city international airport to downtown salt lake city by bus? It can be bus, shuttle or something cheaper. Not rental car or taxi... I'll be renting a car when I first arrive there and after finding a place to stay I'll have to drop off that car at the Airport. Therefore, I need something cheaper public transportation to go back downtown SLC. Thanks, Best answer:A UTA bus leaves the airport for the city center every 30 minutes during the day and every 60 minutes after 7:00 pm. One way fare is $2.00. Bus stops are located in the parking structure between Terminal One and Terminal Two. Limited service is available on weekends and holidays Where is a nice suburb of Salt Lake City?Full question:I'm thinking about moving to the Salt Lake City area ... I have a number of relatives in Utah, but they are in smaller towns (Brigham City, Cedar City ...) I want to live in a bigger city for now because I think it would be best for my career. I'm looking for somewhere out of Salt Lake City that is a reasonable driving distance, with good schools, nice, larger homes, and opportunities for recreation, shopping and dining. A good place to raise a family basically. I prefer somewhere that the houses are newer. Where would this be and how much are the homes? Best answer:Sandy is the nicest suburb of SLC. Nice homes start at about $200K. 23rd best place to live in the country. #1 in Utah. (2006) Cottonwood Heights scored well in 2007. Much more expensive than Sandy though... How can relatively small cities, such as Charlotte and Salt Lake City, support a thriving airline hub?Full question:I can understand why places like Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco are major hub airports. They are generate a lot of origin/destination traffic and can also act as a transfer point. However, how do you explain relatively small metropolitan areas like Charlotte (2.1 million), Memphis (1.2 million), Salt Lake City (1 million) being able to sustain large airline hubs? Best answer:The airlines do this on purpose! It's actually an excellent marketing strategy. Forget dealing with arriving and departing customers and dedicated the whole operation to connections. Why deal with both at the same time? Sure, there ARE people getting on and off in those cities, but porportionally, very few. If you have to connect, why deal with LAX or JFK? Yikes! What monster airports!! Usuallly these airports have room so one airline can design a terminal to its own exacting needs, and those of their connecting customers. I watched how it worked in Charlotte once, where a friend was working. Very impressive! Like a ballet, in they came, out they went... How would people go from Salt Lake City to California Gold Rush?Full question:How would people go from Salt Lake City to California in 1847-1848 when the gold rush was happening. What Path or trail did the go on. Best answer:http://www.calgoldrush.com/ The news spread fast! Gold was everywhere and anyone could become rich overnight! People from all over the world began to travel to California. The problem was that California was far away from just about everywhere so getting to the gold field was very difficult. There were two choices: by land or by sea. Travelling over land meant passing through wilderness and deserts and climbing over huge mountain ranges for over 2,000 miles. And it could take up to 6 months! Many walked, some took wagons, and there were dangers all along the way. Sometimes there wasn’t any water for long periods of time. Some gold-seekers never finished the journey. The sea route often took 6 months, too, because the ships needed to go around the tip of South America. http://www.calgoldrush.com/ http://www.myteacherpages.com/webpages/MrsThonus/social_studies.cfm?subpage=347604 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bbunce77/1849GoldRush.html Is Salt Lake City a target city in a nuclear war?Full question:I'm not actually a Mormon, but many of my friends are, and I LOVE Salt Lake City. It's one of the most beautiful cities in the country, but many people don't seem to know much about it. The mountains are stunning, the Mormon Temple is beautiful (once again, I remind you that I'm not actually Mormon, I'm a Lutheran), and the Great Salt Lake is really cool. Plus, they had the 2002 Olympics. So if anything really bad ever happens, will this city be destroyed? Best answer:I've lived in Salt Lake area my whole life, and it is a beautiful place. To answer your question, my own opinion is there in nothing here to want to destroy. The only thing that comes to mind is the chemical weapons depot in a town called Tooele, pronounced Too ill uh. It is used to incinerate old chemical weapons. It's only about 30 miles west of Salt Lake, and south a bit. That could be target, but not nuclear. Another smaller target could be Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, about 40 miles north of SL. I can't see any reason to nuke the place. I would think nukes would go to major metro areas, and government symbols such as New York, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. Anyway, I'm curioius why you bring religion into the equation at all, your question is about a terrorist attack, or act of war. The local majority religion has nothing to do with your question. AND there are more Mormons in California than Utah, a fact. Where are good areas to look for houses in the Salt Lake City area?Full question:My good friend is looking to relocate to Salt Lake City as he got a new job there. Even though I'm only 1 state away I know nothing about the area itself. Can anyone recommend places to look for or avoid when house searching? He would like something nice middle class, no lower or upper really, and thats safe and quiet. Best answer:I don't really know what parts he should look in but I can tell you a couple of parts that he should avoid. West Valley City and Midvale can be pretty rough. I wouldn't want to live in either town. Magna is another place I would avoid. As far as SLC itself goes, I wouldn't live anywhere in the area except possibly on the east side, above 900 East but this area can get expensive. Generally I would advise him to look as close as possible to where he works, while staying out of these areas. What is the place in Salt Lake City where people drive out at night to see the city?Full question:I hear there is a place in Salt Lake City, Utah where people drive out at night to see an amazing view of the city. I think its know as " The Point" or something. Best answer:I'm not sure of the actual place, but I can assure you that it is nowhere near Seattle. You can not see Salt Lake from Seattle. Does all mail that goes to Utah end up in Salt Lake City and then to the original locations?Full question:I have packages that are supposed to go to a city outside of Salt Lake and it's been said that it's been delivered to Salt Lake. Will the packages get to the actual locations and how long would that take? Best answer:If the package is in Salt Lake today, it will arrive at it's intended destination either tomorrow or Monday. How to spend 5 hours in salt lake city airport.?Full question:I'll travelling via salt lake city airport to Las Vegas, and the connecting time is 5 hours. Pls advice what to do during this transit period. Best answer:They have a golf course right outside of the airport you could probably play a quick nine. How much does it cost to live in Salt Lake City?Full question:I am hopefully moving to Salt Lake City next year in 2013 for college. I am planning on living in an apartment. Nothing fancy or anything, just a little place for one person. Approximately how much would it cost to live there? Thank you :) Best answer:Where do you live currently? But considerably cheaper than any major city & many cities its size. So an apartment will probably cost very little for a decent one along with low taxes What to do in Salt Lake City in only 1 day?Full question:Hey Guys, I'm taking a road trip across the country in about a week. One of the stops is Salt Lake City, UT. I wanted to know from locals or people who have been there... What is the list of must-see things if I only have 1 day there? Thanks in advance! Best answer:If you like the outdoors, go hiking or biking up Little or Big Cottonwood Canyon, 15-20 minutes from Salt Lake City. Millcreek and Emigration Canyonalso have great hiking and are closer to the city. Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood has a tram that goes to the top of the canyons, a zipline, alpine slide and rock climbing wall. Temple Square and This is the Place Heritage Park both showcase the state's Mormon heritage. If you like shopping, you can go the Gateway shopping center, which is outdoors and has a ton of stores. If you want a quick tour of downtown, the TRAX train system is free in the city's center (from the Delta Center, where the Jazz play, to the giant Grand American hotel). Note the city is currently redoing a huge downtown project, City Creek Center, so there is a lot of construction. For dinner, I would HIGHLY recommend Red Iguana, awesome Mexican food at 736 W. North Temple. Ahh Sushi at 22 E. 100 S. has really great sushi and does half-price sushi at lunch and I believe everyday from 5-6 p.m. Check out: utah.com (under "things to do" tab) and utahtrails.com for hiking. If you are going this weekend, the Utah Arts Festival runs Thursday through Sunday and it's a lot of fun! Recommendations for good dry cleaning service in Salt Lake City?Full question:Just moved to Salt Lake city and looking for a good dry cleaning service that will not ruin our clothes. Reasonable priced will be nice too. Any tips will be appreciated. Thank you. Best answer:When I went to Salt Lake City, my family and I found Akc Cleaning Service to work just fine. Just in case- Here are some others http://www.yellowpages.com/Salt-Lake-City-UT/Dry-Cleaners-Laundries/city-Salt-Lake-City?search_terms=dry-cleaning How is the weather in Salt Lake City Ut in November?Full question:Going on vacation the first week of November to visit family in Salt Lake City. I would like to know if it snows or not in November? I personally have seen snow fall before but my friend that is coming with me has not. Best answer:Oh yes it snows! In fact it starts snowing in October! In your packing list I would include sweaters, boots, scarves, hats, and a cute coat. We can get sunny days, but it is still really cold with snow on the ground. Sometimes the snow melts, although it remains around no higher than the 50s. You don't need any heavy-duty clothing such as bulky winter clothing unless you are snow boarding or skiing. I hope it ends up being a great experience for you and your friend! Many people underrate SLC. You can visit temple square, even if you are not Mormon. It is a neat experience. The Gateway at downtown is a great place to shop. They have stores such as Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Apple, and much much more. It is outdoors, though, so dress warmly. Down at the Gateway the Rodizio Grill has recieved great reviews, and there is also a Cheesecake Factory on 6223 S. State right next to the Fashion Place Mall, although it is quite costly. There are also a few public parks in Sandy such as Flat Iron on 8600 South and "the sugar Bowl" is another park which is on 9800 south. There are many parks including those with great hills where you can go sledding with no cost. Have fun! I hope this helps! Follow this link for more things to do in SLC http://www.thingstodo.com/states/UT/salt_lake/index.htm how do i get from salt lake city to monument valley?Full question:i'm british and need to be in utah for a few days for work - i've never been and i've always dreamed of seeing monument valley - is this possible in a day? can i fly home from monument valley or do i need to go all the way back to salt lake city - or somewhere else? how much extra time do i need to allow on the trip to fit in this visit? should i drive? (i hear it's five hours away) or fly? or greyhound? as you can see i know nothing! hope you can help. fantastic details in the answer below, thanks - is there any other way than driving myself? bus? plane? not sure if i can handle a sixteen hour round trip on my own... Best answer:A couple of things : All the roads I will be sending you down I have actually driven on There's a couple of ways you can do this all of them require a car & none of them take 5 hours. I used to live in the area and I drive fast and I couldn't make it in 5 hours It really all depends upon how wild , wooly and three dimensional the roads you want to travel on are If you use mapquest Type in SLC - Kayenta AZ that should take you through Monument Valley although for some reason Mapquest routes you down 191 from Mexican hat UT rather than down 160 to Kayenta.. The trip should take you around 8 hours because you will really need to visit Arches NP in Moab UT From Kayenta mapquest ST. George UT and their routing -which I agree with -will take you across the Navajo Reservation to Page AZ and then to Zion NP and onto St George Ut at that point you have a choice ; you can make a left and drive the 120 miles into Las Vegas or you can make a right and drive the 300 miles back to SLC . Since you did ask there are small regional airports in Cortez & Telluride CO that use twin Engine turbo props and connect into Phoenix The combination of car drop off and one way flight from a tiny airport will get real expensive. Wednesday more details. Until recently Scenic Airlines used to fly into Gouldings Trading Post In Monument Valley they no longer do. Gouldings is legendary and has been there for a long time 1-435-727-3231 or gouldings@gouldings .com As far as the sixteen hour drive goes. First of all these are the roads you always dreamed about driving on, huge big sky, wall to wall scenery , 100 mile views & hauling a** down a little 2 lane strip of asphalt and feeling insignificant as all hell. Second of all you don't have to do it one day. From Kayenta you can either follow mapquests directions and head upto Page AZ then work your way up 89 thru Kanab then ignore the loop into Zion - ouch ! and stay on 89 basically all the way into Provo great great road. You can stay in Page - a bit of a party town or find a place on the way north. The neat thing about the American West is that you can cover distances quickly . Good Luck Is there a particular reason why Salt Lake City Utah is the place for mormons?Full question:Does anyone know why Utah, and Salt lake city is the place where so many of them are? Best answer:By 1844 the Mormons had settled in Illinois and built the second largest city in the State. In that year a mob murdered the President of the Church and his brother. To their surprise this did not end the Church. These and other mobs then threatened to destroy the city and harm the Saints. Brigham Young, the new leader chose to lead the members to the safety of the Rockie Mountains. In 1847 the arrived in Salt Lake and declared it was the place. They built farms and towns. They made peace with the Indians; unlike other territories they found a way to live together. Most importantly they built temples to be the House of the Lord. What are some cool places to see near salt lake city?Full question:I will have 2 days to explore the area around Salt Lake City and was wondering if there are any cool national parks/camping areas near by? Zion and Bryce Canyon are a little far away so I was wondering if there was anything closer? Best answer:I loved Golden Spike National Historic Site in Promontory, Utah. It's the site where the two pieces of the transcontinental railroad came together. They have a little museum, replicas of two steam engines, and you can hike trails along the old railroad cuts. It's pretty cool. - - - Read Stephen Ambrose's book "Nothing Like It In the World" before you go and you'll appreciate the story behind the place even more. What are the main industries of salt lake city?Full question:I have to do this report about salt lake city and I need to know what the main industries are...can somebody help me? Best answer:Sure. The biggest industries are Copper Production (Kennicott Mines), tourism (Mormon Temple, Ski Areas), and Industrial banking (Unisys, Siebel, E-Bay). What Esthetician School in Salt Lake City would you recommend?Full question:I would like to hear pros and cons of the different Esthetician schools in the Salt Lake City area. I was looking at the esthetician course at the Avalon School of Cosmetology, and was wondering if any of you had gone there what was your experience like? Are there any other schools you would recommend instead of Avalon? I would like to get the best education possible, any help is greatly appreciated! :) Best answer:The best thing to do is do research on several esthetician schools in Salt Lake City, UT and make a decision based on the criteria that are most important to you. I linked you to the best places on the web to find Salt Lake City esthetics schools below (Beauty Schools Directory (http://www.beautyschoolsdirectory.com) and BeautySchool.com (http://www.beautyschool.com) are really well known for helping people find beauty schools). Different criteria are important to different people, so I recommend requesting information from any schools in SLC with esthetics programs from the sites below, and getting their advisors to answer all your questions before choosing one to enroll in. What's most important to you? Class size? Cost of the esthetics program? Job placement services? Hands-on training in an in-school salon? Make sure to ask all these questions of all these schools! Another place you might want to check out is MySocialBeauty (http://www.mysocialbeauty.com) because they have reviews of many beauty schools from real students. I hope this helps - and good luck! Who is running for mayor in Salt Lake City 2007?Full question:I have been trying to research all the 2007 Salt Lake City mayoral candidates online, but cannot find much information. I hear that there are six candidates in the primary election. Can somebody tell me the names of all six? I have heard of Dave Buhler, Keith Christensen and Jenny Wilson. Each of them probably have their own websites as well, so that information would be appreciated if known. Also, is there a place on the web to research or view what kind of things they voted for or against in the past as they served on city councils or in other civic capacities? Best answer:There are nine candidates. They are: Ralph Becker Dave Buhler Keith S Christensen J.P. Hughes Rainer Huck Quinn Cady McDonough Robert "Lot" Muscheck John Renteria You can probably find their websites by typing their names along with "Salt Lake City" and "mayor" into a search engine. Voting records should be available for all the instituions in which they've served. I hope this helps somewhat! Jenny Wilson What is the latitude and longitude of Salt Lake City? Also 3 other cities that share the same latitude as SLC?Full question:Does anyone know what the latitude/longitude of Salt Lake City is? Also what other 3 cities that share the same latitude as Salt Lake City. This is my homework for Geography and I need to find all this out or I will lose points. Can someone please answer cause I need this answered by tomorrow. Thank you to anyone who answers:) Best answer:You can find this information yourself on the web - google SLC and Wikipedia has the location - then compare that with a map - How can a Mormon be president if his #1 loyalty is towards Salt Lake City, not the United States?Full question:Fact: Salt Lake City is the Vatican of Mormonism. It's where Mormons get their spiritual guidance. They turn not to the Constitution, not to the Holy Bible, but to Utah and the Book of Mormon. How can a Mormon be president of the USA when his loyalty is first and foremost to Utah, not the United States? Best answer:Fact: Salt Lake City is NOT the Vatican of the LDS Church. It may be where the headquarters of the church is but that doesn't matter. What the hell do you mean we don't turn to the constitution?! We believe in the Bible. We don't look toward Utah beyond the fact that the church headquarters are there. Romney's first loyalty would be to America & the constitution! He's not from Utah. I lived in Utah for 7 years and I have ZERO loyalty to it. BTW, I'm not a Romney fan. Pointless rant, dude! where to live in salt lake city or surrounding areas?Full question:My boyfriend and I are moving to Salt Lake City from Austin for a job transfer and we have no idea where to look for houses. We are 24 and 26 years old, non-mormon, and would like to experience some sort of night life. His territory will be all over utah so we are not tied down to living in Salt Lake City. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Best answer:Park City is by far the most non-Mormon area. Salt Lake varies a lot by neighborhood, but the city proper is the least Mormon area, especially the 'Avenues' on the north slope. Beware of most smaller cities if you want night life. Where can i recycle my empty plastic water bottles in salt lake city for the .5 cents?Full question:Me and my girlfriend drink a lot of water and i started saving the bottles so i could get the refund. I live in Draper Utah and its close to salt lake city... I would like to go turn them in. Best answer:Please follow these action: 1.Smash the bottles. 2.Put them in the gunny sack. 3.Tight tne gunny sack with the brick. 4.Dump into the lake and it will sink peacefully. what are some cool places to see and do in or near salt lake city for people in their mid 60's?Full question:I have relatives going there and are looking for things to do and see in or near the city. After 2-3 days in the city they will head to Moab, Arches National Park, Canyonlands, Durango Colorado, back up to Grand Junction in Colorado, then back to Salt Lake City. They are just looking at what to see in Salt Lake for those couple of nights. They've already got plans for everything else. Best answer:I would recommend: 1. The Tabernacle - Fantastic! 2. Utah Museum of Fine Arts 3. This is the Place Heritage Park 4. Tracy Aviary 5. Great Salt Lake You can find out info on these on the web but to me these are 5 of the best things to do in SLC. Also - tell them not to miss the Durango - Silverton train in Durango if they've never done it. Website: http://www.durangotrain.com/ If they want to do it better make reservations ASAP because it is very popular. It is the coolest way to see the Rockies that I know of. What is the best way to get to Salt Lake City Utah from Fargo ND?Full question:I need to drive from Fargo ND to Salt Lake City end of May. Which is the safest? Best answer:On the map it looks like your are in a corner of a square - you're either going to have to go west and then south or south and then west, and there's no real diagonal route. I'd probably go south to Kansas City and then west through Denver. I haven't been to Fargo but I've take that route from KC and also I've been north from Denver to Canada. The freeway from KC to Denver is good and well traveled, plus the drive from Denver to Salt Lake City is pretty spectacular.... Also a well traveled route. Mapping it will give you mileage - maybe the northern way is fewer miles, if that's important to you. Powered by Yahoo!
