Glenn, George C. Marshall received his first star (flag rank) as Brigadier General on 1 October, 1936. From this point he moves rather quickly and on the day the Germans invade Poland on 1 September, 1939 he is in fact a full "General" with 4 stars on his collars. He worked his way up within the Officer ranks and in fact was well connected politically. He was by most accounts one of the most effective planners and developers of troop training the United States ever had. Winston S. Churchill would consider only Douglas MacArthur to be a better General (and the best) the United States had during WW II; however, he felt that General Marshall was a very "competent" U.S. Army Officer. Important as one considers the need for credibility during times of crisis as such we were confronted with during WW II. Hope this helps. What steps are taken to confirm a soldier deserves a silver star medal?

Hi, I am doing a background check on a fictional story, and we need to just get some facts straight, since none of the researchers has this type of military experience. I apologize in advance, if my terminology is off. Okay, so say a Soldier is in a battle, and he does an heroic act. He gets discharged or takes a leave of absence soon after that battle. While he's back home in a small town, he finds out that he's been awarded a silver star medal for that previous battle. Now, my questions are: - Would they send someone in person to the town he lives in, and tell him in person? - Do they have to do some interview process to confirm that he was in that battle, and the facts were true? - What kind of paperwork would need to be done, and what officer rank would be dealing with it? A Silver Star is a senior enough award that he would definitely be contacted if he was receiving it. Normally they wouldn't just say, "hey, here you go," they'd want to do an awards ceremony for him. Awards are submitted via the commanding officer of the individual, whether of the specific detatchment to which he is assigned or a larger unit commander. Under appropriate circumstances, a senior enlisted member can originate the award submission. They are approved (or not) based on the justification provided by the submitter. Generally, the heavier the justification provided by the submitter, the more likely the award to be approved. Like anything else in the military, it is submitted through a chain of command. The soldier himself would have very little to do with the process; it would be more on the chain of command involved and the approval authority necessary. They wouldn't necessarily interview him, because the assumption is that the person submitting the award recommendation is being truthful. The criteria set forth by the Pentagon are: The Silver Star is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Army, is cited for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The required gallantry, while of a lesser degree than that required for award of the Distinguished Service Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction. Soldiers who received a citation for gallantry in action during World War I may apply to have the citation converted to the Silver Star Medal. Normally, awards of such seniority would be approved by a general officer in charge of a force level unit.

The Walking stands for Walking Horse. No this is not a bit for you to use. I am a proponent of shanked bits on the trail because I have seen too many horses with bleeding mouths from riders sawing at the reins to stop a spooked horse. But unless you have a gaited horse, this bit is NOT the bit for you. In fact, I do not like this particular bit with gaited horses. The lack of port means no tongue clearance. This bit, when used improperly can literally cut the tongue of a horse in two. If you feel you need a shanked bit, then get a grazing bit.

Is it true that Navy Seals could not get their silver star due to government cuts?

I have been told that a friend of ours could not get his silver star in the Navy Seals due to cut backs in the government. Thus cutting back any added benefits he would get. If this is true, would such a decision come from the White House or Dept. of Defense?

I think this is completely bogus. I was in the Marines for 4 years. Firstly, it is your command's decision whether or not you get a Silver Star. If you have done something to merit one, and your command puts you in for the award, you will probably get it. Secondly, besides the cost of the metal itself, a silver star would have no effect on the budget of the Department of Defense. There is no financial gain for having a silver star. And the decision would come from the DOD. (department of Navy specifically) but the decision to award a silver star happens at a much lower level.

Note: It appears that some police departments also award a Silver Star so F.O.P. may stand for Fraternal Order Of Police. I have never heard of it in reference to the military award. Personally, i believe with the truth now out there, that award should be rescinded. The Silver Star was supposedly for engaging the enemy in a brave heroic fashion. I see your point but at the same time since the medal was awarded posthumously, I think the award should not be rescinded, the family has been thru enough already with all the cover up from the mucky mucks at the Pentagon. So what should they say now, 'oops, we killed him, sorry, can we have the medal back?' Let's just leave it alone. An unfortunate event of any war is that people do die by friendly fire, it's inevitable with all the munitions flying thru the air....someone is bound to get hit. I just think this particular incident needs to go away and let the family get closure so they can move on.

Well first off, an A2C in Vietnam, is the same as a A1C today, an E-3. The ranks changed around 1967. A1C became SRA/SGT E-4 A2C became A1C E-3 A3C became Airmen E-2 Basic Airmen became Airmen Basic E-1 There were alot of E-3's in the USAF who received silver stars in Vietnam Mainly Search and Rescue PJ's and Helicopter Crewmen I haven't found any A3C's who were awarded the silver star, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. The Silver Star is the third highest medal for gallantry one can be awarded in the Marine Corps. The two higher medals are the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. In the Army, the Silver Star is the second highest medal of gallantry. You will often see the Silver Star awarded for leadership under fire. An example is SSgt, Evers, of the 3rd Bn 5th Marines in Iraq. Evers maneuvered through machine gun fire and small arms fire to assess enemy positions and direct his platoon's fire with disregard to his own safety. The fighting positions constructed under his leadership protected his marines' lives while withstanding attacks by RPG's, thousands of rounds of small arms fire, and a car bomb. Another Silver Star award to a marine of the 3rd Bn 5th Marines is during Vietnam. Lance Corporal Frank Ambrose was awarded the Silver Star for valiant action. It should make no difference at all. There's no scenery to see no matter which train you take. I've traveled by train 3 times from NY to Miami and trust me, there is hardly anything of interest to see except train yards, junk yards, and flat, ugly looking terrain. A couple of towns that the train stops in might be nice to see plus you might see peeks of the monuments in Wash DC and the skyline of Phila but that's about it. Bring lots to read and things to keep you busy. The ride is very borrrrrrrring.

usually not right away. I did this once to my motorcycle bulb (silverstar) and it lasted about 2 weeks. There is no for sure answer as to when it will go out.

Are Sylvania Silver Star headlights worth all the money and hype?

Right now I have the Sylvania Cool Blue halogens, but they aren't as blue as when I first got them. They are not as bright as I thought they would be, all though they are way brigther than standard yellow halogens. The worst part about them is reflect very poorly off of wet road surfaces which is one advantage the yellow halogens. I was wondering if the Silver Stars are superior to both or should I save my money and go back to regular bulbs?

I've used the silver stars and they will stay their color, white, for longer. You might be better off picking up a set Japanese set from e-bay for alot less money. But dont buy the cheapest ones either, look for the color temp (ex:5000,8500K,etc)The higher the number the brighter the bulb.

okay so im in about FS4. havent been fully tested yet, but my coach says im about that [ salchow, flip, loop, combination jumps, etc.] But she said i need some new boots for my skates. I was recommended Silver star reidells for better support, and they are $420. i bout $250 skates just a year back from the same guy and they only lasted a year, so i just dont want to make the wrong decision. does the price sound reasonable, and am i choosing the right boot, that will last me for a while? oh yeah and he asked me my weight, i guess for the support of the boots reasons. im about 140 and 5'9 if that makes a difference in what boot is needed.

The Silver Stars sound right on for your level . . . but most importantly make sure they fit you well (I don't know what skates you had before) - as you know, different brands fit feet differently. Will they last . . . hard to say . . . some skaters are light on their feet, others are more aggressive. Some skate a couple times a week - and others skate tons more. "Better support" depends on what skates you are graduating from - but it sounds like it if you paid $250 just last year whatever boots they were.
