Is a lift ticket necessary for everyone in ski resorts in New England?

Full question:

Hi there, If I don't use any lifts in a ski resort( my friend is going to teach me), should I pay any other admission type fees? I live in Boston so probably I will go to Mount Sunapee, Killington, Wachusett, or Sugarloaf. I appreciate any answer

Best answer:

Technically you don't need a lift ticket at most VT resorts because the land is mostly either on USFS or VT State forest. If you want to walk up and down the beginner hill all day you might be able to get by under the radar. However, Ski Patrol and Mountain Management can come up with a bevy of reasons to boot you out. One commonly waged reason is that you are skiing on snow that has been made and/or groomed by mountain personnel and therefore you are using a service provided by the resort, therefore you should pay. I know the same goes for Whiteface and Gore in NY and Wildcat in NH. I can't say for certain about the Maine and Mass. resorts. It has been a few years since I was at Ascutney, but I think they have a lift at their beginner hill where you do not need a lift ticket. It's a tough call. I hate paying high prices to ski myself, but I also work at a ski hill and would be peeved at non-paying skiers making tracks over the snow I made and them not paying for it. At a mountain that is on private land (I'm pretty sure Sunapee is not on public land at all) they can boot you out for any reason at all and skiing w/o a ticket could be argued as trespassing.

How do you qualify for the AT&T Classic at TPC Sugarloaf?

Full question:

Is this a pro tournament only? Or is it similar to the Masters where amateurs can win qualifiers to play in this event?

Best answer:

Whether you're a pro or an amateur, you can pay the entry and Monday qualify. You would declare your status at qualifying, pay and play. If you got a spot, you would tee it up Thurs. Check out http://www.pgatour.com. Good luck.

Ever been on a derailed ski lift like what happened in Sugarloaf today?

Full question:

In 14 years of snowboarding I've only had issues a couple times, but it wasn't seemingly a big deal. my local mountain has one ancient lift. I try not to think about it everytime I get on that rusty POS. Hope those six skiers came out ok!

Best answer:

eight skiers... number keeps changing, and no, i think that's why it made national news. when was the last time a chairlift actually fell? The lifts (at sugarloaf) may stop occasionally but its usually for some kid who fell getting off, actually in my 16 years of skiing I've never been on a "broken" lift. So strange... Hopefully it won't happen again, anywhere.

What town is near Sunday River and Sugarloaf?

Full question:

I'm trying to put together a ski trip and trying to find a place to stay, I want to snowboard at both mountains in Maine.. does anyone know a town that is pretty close driving distance to both?

Best answer:

sunday river is in Bethel sugarloaf is in Carrabassette valley (sp?), nearest major town is Kingfield about 15 miles away... ..the distance between sunday river and sugarloaf is almost 100 miles ...the thing about maine ski resorts is that there are no surrounding tourist towns like you find in vermont...you almost have to stay right at the resort since there is a whole lot of nothing around it, especially between bethel and kingfield....you could stay at kingfield, then you would be about 20 miles to sugarloaf and about 80 miles to sunday river...unfortunately there really isnt a better place that evens out the drive more...but 80 miles is more than reasonable for a daytrip and you could be at sugarloaf really quick, which is the better mountain anyway ...

How do I get to the top of the Sugarloaf in Rio?

Full question:

Best answer:

matt is correct, but with one comment: the base of the sugarloaf is not at botafogo (a rio neighborhood). It is at Urca (another, very small and beautiful neighborhood). also, once you are there, you should go and walk around the sugarloaf base (called claudio coutinho's road): it is right by the sea, and it's the last piece of original forest in the city of rio, where you can see wild parrots flying around. years ago, at the first stop of the two cablecars, there were music shows at friday/saturday nights, with an unbelievable beautiful views of the city. I am not sure there are still music concerts like these, but you should definitely check.

Does Sugarloaf have any good songs besides Green Eyed Lady?

Full question:

Best answer:

Is Tiger Woods going to play the TPC @ Sugarloaf PGA event in Atlanta?

Full question:

If anyone has a link to Tiger Woods' 2008 schedule, please post it.

Best answer:

You've received answers that are all over the place. I'll answer your question first and then address the contradictions and correct the errors. Woods will NOT play in the AT&T Classic at TPC Sugarloaf on May 15-18. He's competed in the event just once, winning it in 1998. Although he had already won his first major by then, he was still testing which golf courses he liked and best fit his schedule. Woods' schedule is about as predictable as anyone's in the world. He's earned that luxury and can always add tournaments whenever he wants but he rarely plays three weeks in a row. He'll compete at the Wachovia and then at THE PLAYERS in the two weeks leading up to the AT&T Classic. So, only an unprecedented series of events would force an entry at Sugarloaf. Meanwhile, tigerwoods.com is a fine site but no golfer follows his published schedule to perfection. Right now, there aren't any events on Tiger's schedule (on the web site) between the Masters and U.S. Open. So, golf fans must rely on independent published reports and Woods' historical commitments. Also, there is no major in the Atlanta "area." The Masters is held in Augusta, Georgia, 150 miles due east. And THE PLAYERS Championship isn't held at East Lake. It's contested at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. East Lake GC hosts THE TOUR Championship. Finally, just to give you a broader perspective on Woods' schedule, the only event on which he wavers annually is the Northern Trust Open, held at Riviera CC, where he's never won on the PGA Tour. During this year's Buick Invite, he was asked if he'll enter the Northern Trust and he didn't confirm or deny his intent. When Woods doesn't confirm or deny something, that means he won't be there or do it. If he was planning on playing in the AT&T Classic, it would span at least two news cycles and you'd most certainly have heard about it.

what is a sugarloaf?

Full question:

i heard my great grandmother talking about using a half of sugarloaf for a pie plant pie

Best answer:

Yummy thats my favourite , I love sugar loaf , but my mom preapares it some times . A sugarloaf was the traditional form, a tall gently-tapering cylinder with a conical top,in which refined sugar was exported from the Caribbean and eastern Brazil from the 17th to 19th centuries. "households bought their white sugar in tall, conical loaves, from which pieces were broken off with special iron sugar-cutters. Shaped something like very large heavy pliers with sharp blades attached to the cutting sides, these cutters had to be strong and tough, because the loaves were large, about 14 inches in diameter at the base, and 3 feet high [15th century]...In those days, sugar was used with great care, and one loaf lasted a long time. The weight would probably have been about 30 lb. Later, the weight of a loaf varied from 5 lb to 35 lb, according to the moulds used by any one refinery. A common size was 14 lb, but the finest sugar from Madeira came in small loaves of only 3 or 4 lb in weight...Up till late Victorian times household sugar remained very little changed and sugar loaves were still common and continued so until well into the twentieth century..." .:

Sewing classes near Sugarloaf PA?

Full question:

I'm looking for some sewing classes close to home. All the design colleges are too far away and I've searched the internet and can't seem to find classes that are not online. Does any one know someone personally or someone who offers design and sewing classes in this area of PA?

Best answer:

Have you checked with fabric stores, sewing machine dealers, community colleges and adult ed programs? Are you young enough for 4H (which often has excellent sewing programs)? If you're striking out, I'd suggest getting hold of the local ASG chapter: http://www.asg.org/files/locator/index.php or one of the PACC members who teach in your area: http://www.paccprofessionals.org/site/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=88 If still no joy, there are some good beginning sewing videos out there... the one I like best is Studio Sewing Skills, which is a retired sewing/patternmaking teacher from FIDM teaching a young lady what amounts to first year design school sewing. Because it's a DVD, you can skip all over easily, and repeat what you need to see again and again till you understand. It starts with threading a sewing machine and learning to control the machine, then moves through all the basic garment sewing techniques. http://www.butterick.com/item/CC770.htm?tab=connie_crawford&page=3 Or there are plenty of good sewing books available at most libraries. My favorite three for beginners are Crawford's Guide to Fashion Sewing (which is a first year textbook, very step by step), Reader's Digest Complete Book of Sewing (in many editions and some variant titles... should be able to get a used copy cheaply), and Simplicity's Simply The Best Sewing Book, which is a little heavier on home dec than garment sewing.
