Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

Which ski resort in Utah is better for beginning skiers and snowboarders-Park City or the Canyons?

Full question:

I am planning a family trip to Utah in December. We need to stay near/in Park City. Some kids (and adults) want to ski and some want to snowboard but most of them have never done either. Between The Canyons and Park City, which would be better all around for beginners (Deer Valley is out because it doesn't allow snowboarding)?

Best answer:

Park City. The majority of slopes at the Canyons are advanced terrain. Though I'd say Snowbasin is a better choice than either of those. It's cheaper and has far more begin/intermediate slopes than PC or Canyons. You are right--Deer Valley and Alta are better for beginners by far but neither allow snowboarding.

Which has better terrain park, Park City Ski Resort, Or the Canyons?

Full question:

I am wondering Where I should go next year for skiing. I ski park all day and am wondering if the Canyons or Park City has better park.

Best answer:

My vote would be Park City. They have three parks this year,, two of which have their own dedicated chairs. The Three Kings chaird for the Three Kings Park, and Eaglet Chair for King Con Ridge. And then there is Kings Crown for the ENORMOUS jumps.

Best answer:

Where is the cheapest place to park and camp near/in the PA Grand Canyons?

Full question:

My friend and I want to go camping near/in the PA Grand Canyons (not the actual grand canyons). We don't have much money at all and don't want to stay in the State Parks which is 15-19 dollars a night. I would like somewhere for free or less than 10 bucks a night. We don't want to hike anywhere to camp. We just want to park and camp. Thanks in advance!

Best answer:

If you're that strapped for funds, perhaps you should delay your trip. Just pitching a tent and camping out isn't smart. Any legitimate campground will charge you at least that much per night. Here's a link:http://www.allcampgrounds.com/blog/?tag=pennsylvania-grand-canyon

Is it possible to visit the Great Canyons in Vegas without local tours from companies?

Full question:

In a few weeks, we're visiting the USA and are visiting Las Vegas too. Is there a way to use your own rented car to see the Great Canyons? Will we need a 4x4 car? Tickets? Or do we have to take the bus etc. tours? Please explain and include a source if possible. Will be very grateful.

Best answer:

It is simple to get to the Grand Canyon http://vegasnature.com/GrandCanyon.htm shows you a video of the GC followed by a map how to get there There are really lots of places that you can see easily on way to the South Rim. Lake Mead http://vegasnature.com/LakeMead.htm Hoover Dam http://vegasnature.com/HooverDam.htm Colorado River http://vegasnature.com/ColoradoRiver.htm Oatman http://vegasnature.com/Oatman.htm on the way back stop in Laughlin http://vegasnature.com/Laughlin.htm http://www.vegasnature.com/ has videos of each area followed by maps showing how to get there. You may want to email their trip adviser also.

Are there Canyons that are bigger than the Grand Canyon?

Full question:

I read a book my Louis Lamore (sp?) that said there is a canyon in Idaho bigger than the Grand Canyon. And I read "Desert Solitaire" (favorite book) stating there are 1 or 2 canyons near Moab, UT that are bigger than the Grand. So I want to know if this is true & where the canyons are and what their names are.

Best answer:

It really depends on what your definition of "biggest" is, as a canyon can be "large" by its depth, length, or the total area of the canyon system. The deepest canyon in the world, Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon, along the Brahmaputra in Tibet, China, is slightly longer than Grand Canyon, and is also regarded by many as be the world's largest canyon. Hells Canyon is a canyon in Idaho, roughly 16 km (10 miles) across; not as dramatic as the Grand Canyon, which is 277 miles (446 km) long. However, the sense of depth there is tremendous. Hope this helps!

Why are GMC canyons and Chevy Colorados Hard to find?

Full question:

So I've been out looking for a car here in SLC area, UT. I know what truck I want, and thats the Chevrolet Colorado, or GMC Canyon. I've run into the issue of finding them. Either they have high mileage or are out of my price range. The 2004-2006 years had fairly good sales and I think now people would start to trade them in. I see a lot of these Colorados/Canyons driving around, So does anyone have any idea of why they are hard to find.

Best answer:

actually my daugter had one, unfortunatly, they tried some odd combination of motors that year, a six, a five cylinder pile of poop. I try to explain to her that the small block v8 5.3 was one of gm best ever motors, and the fuel mileage on a heavy truck changes little and you lose tons of power, NONE IF THIS MADE IT FROM ONE EAR TO THE OTHER. ON MY DAUGHTER. since she had the truck it has been one problem after another, and the 5 cylinder engine is more expensive to rebuild, and a pile of crap compared to the 5.3 any how, consumer reviews pretty much rated the truck poorly in every category, including maintenance and fit and finish.I liked the way the truck looked, if you are bound and determined to get one please do yourself a favor, and get the 5.3 v8 other wise plan on going up hills at 40 and down hill at 55. good luck.

What movies did they show at (1970's) amusement parks that were shot from a helicopter moving through canyons?

Full question:

The movies would sometimes start out at the front of a roller coaster and then switch to a helicopter flying super fast through mountains and canyons.

Best answer:

I'm not exactly sure they had an actual name in any place but Disneyland...and that one was called "Circarama, U.S.A." I remember that you stood the entire time the film played...there were metal bars to lean on and the films were in a round theatre with screens surrounding the viewer an entire 360 degrees.

Whats the difference between sea canyons and ocean trenches?

Full question:

Whats the difference in the way they are formed and the way they look?

Best answer:

A sea canyon is normally considered to be an extension of the kinds of canyons found on land and are caused by erosion from river outfalls, subsidence of land canyons and occasionally from continuous current flows. With respect to the water surface and to the bottom profile they are not very deep - usually a few hundred feet and are commonly in or on the continental shelf. Ocean trenches are the result of subduction zones where one techtonic plate is going under another. They are much much deeper - thousands of feet is typical and normally fall beyond the continental shelf and may be in mid ocean.

Does anyone on here work for Canyons Restaurant in WA State?

Full question:

Probably not the answer you are looking for..but I do hope this helps! All the best to you :)

How long should I plan to visit the Grand Canyons?

Full question:

I want to take my family to the Grand Canyons, but I am not sure how long we should stay in the area. I thought that 7 days would be a good guess but now am thinking that that is too long of a time - we are thinking about doing a combo trip to Las Vegas. The 7 days would then have to include drive time to LV and the amount of days. What would you all say would be sufficient for seeing this natural beauty. (P.S. kids and grandparents are coming along with us!!!)

Best answer:

Assuming that, with the kids and grandparents in tow, you will be basically doing the major stops, 2 decently planned days should be adequate. Three will give you a bit more time to take things at a more leisurely pace and maybe a short quiet hike for a picnic or something. If you plan on flying into and out of Las Vegas, you amy want to opt for the north rim of GCNP and also make stops at Zion NP and Bryce Canyon NP. If you decide to not include Vegas but do want to see more than just GCNP, not far from there is Petrified Forest/Painted Desert NP. That is definitely worth a trip and the drive from GCNP to Petrified Forest while boring in spots can be made infinitely more interesting by a stop at Cameron Trading Post to check out some of the local Native American culture and crafts. You have tons of options in the area and can easily fill 7 days. Have an AWESOME trip!

What are the names of George Canyons sons?

Full question:

I am just curious what the names of his sons are. I am a big fan of his and yet I don't even know the names of his sons.

Best answer:

His wife's name is Jennifer, son's name is Kale and daughter's name is Madison. The song "Maddies Song" was written for her. ________ He had this to say about the song written for his son, (Says Canyon, “My son said to me, about six months ago, ‘Dad, why don’t you have any songs about me on your albums?’ And he’d just turned 10. And I said, ‘You know what buddy, you’re right.” So I wrote two songs about him on this album.” “Just Like You” “Kale knows it’s a true song,” says Canyon, with a soft chuckle. “When we heard it on the radio for the first time, he sat there with a big grin on his face, because he knew it was his.) And I’ll tell you, as a Dad, that’s a pretty darn cool feeling.______Photo of him with children http://georgecanyon.ca/x/img/photos/fans/apr-24-2004/DaveRoseRyan_0001_thumb.jpg

What is the relationship between sea canyons and river valleys?

Full question:

Best answer:

if there were no ocean canyons (trenches) then the sedimentation flowing down the rivers would result in ever increasing thickness of sediment deposits on the ocean floor. The river vallyes have been formed by the river eroding the earth/soil/rock away (underneath the river) over long periods of time. The river has always tried to find the easiest way down so some rive valleys are wide due to the changes in the river location at any give time. but when scientists were finally able to check the ocean floor they were surprised to find the oceanic "crust" to be very thin. They figured out that the sedimentation fom the rivers was rotated back into the earth at the trenches - it's a way for the ocean to renew itself. the trenches are one form of the earth's plate boundaries, "convergent boundaries", or crust eating if you like to think of it that way. the earth rocks! it is not still for one minute, plates moving, erosion, sedimentation build up, vocanoes, shifting magnetic fields.... a spot on the earth's equator is spinning at 1000 miles per hour

In California, does it feel good when Santa Ana winds blowing from the canyons?

Best answer:

Yet another brilliant and Intelligent question brought to you by the person who ask such things as; "Isn't it true starving poor people on welfare are smarter than Dolphins?" "Why won't Neocons support Nancy Pelosi?" "Is it illegal to rob a bank to feed poor people on welfare? "Why can't USA Govt tax electricity when rich people use it, to fund more welfare for poor folks?" "Why can't all Americans get free Govt Food Stamps?" "Why is bestiality so severely criminalized in Canada?" "Do British for the most part agree the Nazi holocaust wasn't a hoax?" "Can't we elect more Liberals so we can take America in a more Liberal direction?" "If America is a republic, why are their Kingdom's in America?" "In America, why don't I have freedom to receive redistributions of wealth from the rich?" "Why don't Canadians accept that USA invented Democracy/freedom for all the world?" What happened to the grand canyons rivers?

Full question:

My dad was wondering and so was i i know there are still some rivers but what happened to thr other ones

Best answer:

Hey yoyoyoyoyoyo..., Well, the Colorado River was dammed up behind the Glen Canyon Dam. Now, instead of a raging muddy tourant, there is a bottom clean spillway - They are still there, just the water is diverted to Pheonix, LA, and other cities before the river gets to the ocean. Actually, the river does not make it to the sea any more. Other dams along the way server to provide recreation. Mead, Parker, etc.

Which park is suppose to be better this year park city or the canyons?

Full question:

I have been riding canyons for 3 years now and was thinking about hitting up PC this year. But i heard that PC's park manager isn't going to be there this year and i also heard that the Canyons is getting a ton of new land and maybe a new park with some road gaps, tree jibs and some other stuff like that. I just wanna know if the rumors are true? Has anyone else heard anything about this??

Best answer:

Park City has consistantly had great parks for years. The Canyons has a good park, but Park City is fantastic. I also heard that rumor about the Canyons expansion though, and am looking forward to riding it if its true when I head out to Utah in December. Overall though I would give PC a shot. I have NEVER seen more talented snowboarders in one place than I have in the parks at Park City. (Not to mention pros left and right, who are very fun to watch) I have never seen a pro at the canyons, while in just one day at PC last year I got to watch scotty lago and kevin pearce in the pipe, and got cheered on by Dan Brisse while playing around on the same rail he was sessioning.

You can actually make your self physically sick just by worrying. If any radiation has reach California at all, it is too small to cause any sickness.

What is the thought to have an effect on the formation of submarine canyons?

Full question:

a. the sea level b. turbidity currents c. earthquakes d. all of the above

Definitely all of the above! Major submarine canyon fan systems tend to be initiated by massive drops in sea level (notably in the Pleistocene) and Turbidity currents and earthquakes which generate submarine slumps bothy modify the canyon. These are basically submarine deltas.
