Where and when can i plant wintergreen?

Full question:

i want to start planting wintergreen... is it possible to plant it on your own, where can i buy it, and when should i plant it? right now where i live it gets to about -15 in winter tops, and up to 35 in summer.

Best answer:

It's not a common nursery plant, so if your local garden center doesn't carry it, you might ask if they can order for you. It also may be possible to mail order plants. Look in the spring. No one will have plants this time of year. It wants a shady spot, or shady-ish. In the wild, it grows in Northern U.S. and Canada, in well drained, moist soils, often under pine trees. Your winters should not trouble it. It's the relatively moist spot (but no standing water), and enough shade that you might have trouble with. it hates clay soils. Although it's groundcover-like, and spreads through underground stems - it is NOT a mint. Gaultheria procumbens is the botanical name, and it's technically considered a low-growing shrub - though "shrub" is not what comes to mind when you look at it.

Is wintergreen rubbing alcohol bad for auto glass?

Full question:

I'm just curious, i think there might be a leak in the seal between the car and the windshiled glass because if I'm cleaning off my windshield after a rain storm has passed i can smell the normal winshield wash. its not a pleasant smell so i was wondering if i added some 50% isopropyl alcohol with wintergreen to make it smell better would that be so bad?

Best answer:

We use alcohol to clean the glass at my manufacturing company that produces auto glass. the only problem with adding that to the window wash system would be the fact the alcohol will deteriorate the rubber hoses feeding the system and rust any metal parts that will be in the pump that distributes the system. It is OK to clean your glass with alcohol but I would not recommend putting it in your cars cleaning system

Full question:

I dip every couple of days. I've tried Red Seal and Copenhagen Wintergreen, but Grizzly easily gives me the best buzz. Although after I take it out, I get sweaty and nauseous with a bad headache. Why is that?

That happens to everyone (smokers alike) when ingesting nicotine. It's a side-effect of the introduction of it into the blood stream. After a while, once the body becomes acclimated to nicotine, the side-effects become less and less.

How do I revive my Japanese Maple and Wintergreen Boxwoods after a late spring freeze?

Full question:

We had an early spring here in Missouri and then a late, hard freeze in mid-April. All of our trees have sprung back and produced another set of leaves, except our Japanese Maple. It looks, quite frankly, dead. The Wintergreen Boxwoods all suffered badly as well. They are all brown, but half of them are starting to sprout a few new leaves. Should I prune the Japanese Maple and Boxwoods to help them along, or leave them alone and cross my fingers? Or should I tear them all out and start over again?

Best answer:

Don't pull them out just yet!! However, DO water them regularly!! I would use fertilizer at half strength. For your Maple Tree, scratch the bark with your fingernail. If it is green underneath, then it is still alive. If it is brown, it is dead. You may have some dead and some live branches. However, if the trunk is brown, it is gone! You can try the fingernail test on the Boxwood. However, I would be more optimistic here. You should trim off the brown branches as that will stimulate the plant to grow some more.

How many calories are in a package of wintergreen icebreaker mints?

Full question:

i know that the nutritional info states that there's 0 calories in one mint, but what if you eat it all

Best answer:

well if eahc one states that it 0 calories it could be under 1 like .9 or .5. and since there mints can come under a different ounce size per mint, a mint can be anywhare between .9 to .5 calories... so I would take the .9 count and times it by the amount of mints your going to eat and that would be your calorie count. Why would you eat all of them? That's gross!

How to safely ingest wintergreen essential oil?

Full question:

I understand it is nature's "Aspirin", and I know it can be applied topically to sore areas, but can it be taken orally for a headache? If so, how much is safe?

Best answer:

OH HECK NO!!!! It's toxic!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wintergreen#Toxicity_of_Wintergreen_oil You seriously have to be careful just getting it on the skin - a few drops undiluted on the skin can cause toxicity symptoms - you certainly don't ingest it!

If you bite into a LifeSavor's wintergreen mint, in the dark, will it make sparks? Plez answer me fast?

Full question:

My husband and his mom, think that if you bite, really hard, into a Life Savor's wintergreen mint, to be specific, in the dark, it will make blue sparks. You can't even suck on it. The LifeSavor cannot touch your tongue or any wettness? Is this true?

Best answer:

If you chew really hard on wintergreen lifesavers, you do indeed get sparks of light. This is a phenomenon called "triboluminescence" which occurs when the crystals in the candy are compressed hard and quickly, like when chewing them hard. I've done it a bunch of times 'cuz it's fun and a nifty party trick. You can suck on it all you want, getting it wet doesn't matter...though it works best while they're big. http://pages.towson.edu/ladon/wg/candywww.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triboluminescence
