Zao was a progressive rock/zeuhl band that was founded by Yochk'o Seffer (saxophone, clarinet) and François Cahen (piano). They were active from 1971 to 1994 and released 6 studio albums. Both Seffer and Cahen were ex-members of Magma. In 1976, Magma violinist Didier Lockwood also joined the band and appeared on their albums Kawana and Live! I have skied a lot at Zao so I can tell you about that. There is a lot of terrain suitable for a beginner at Zao. Even up in the snow monsters there are green squares that are accessed by the gondola. The onsen itself has a little bit of sulphur in it which is quite refreshing. There is a municipal onsen that you can use for 200 yen or so if you are staying at place that doesn't have its own. Overall, Zao is very old-school-it's the "real Japan", unlike the much more cosmopolitan Niseko. Apres-ski at Zao is likely to be a big bowl of ramen and then a long soak-not a disco. One good thing at Zao is that if you get bored with skiing you can take the gondola up to see the snow monsters lit up at night, or visit lake Okama.
