Snow Skiing Questions

The following questions were posted in Yahoo's 'Snow Skiing' category:

When can I expect there to be enough snow to book a ski holiday to Jindabyne/Thredbo this 2009 ski season?

Full question:

Best answer:

I'd imagine early august would be the ideal mix of snowcover and cold

Perisher or Thredbo? - winter season - which one is better?

Full question:

Hi guys First time going to Australian Snow Mountaints, please suggest which one is better?

Best answer:

They each have their advantages and disadvantages. Perisher is higher, and has more reliable snow in marginal seasons Thredbo has more vertical, and better advanced runs if there is a good snow cover. Perisher is more spread out, and takes a bit of local knowledge to get around efficiently. Thredbo Village is more compact and has better nightlife. Perisher is probably less intimidating for beginners. Perisher has more surface lifts which are harder to ride (particularly for boarders) http://wikiski.com/wiki/index.php/Perisher_Blue http://wikiski.com/wiki/index.php/Thredbo http://www.ski.com.au

Skiing at Thredbo, July 2009?

Full question:

Hi All, I am planning a skiing trip to Thredbo, Australia, for the weekend in July of the 10th and 11th (Friday and Saturday). At the moment, only 7 lifts are opens and all the t-bars are shut, and most runs are not operating. It is three (3) weeks away and I am wondering, does anyone reckon in three weeks time that the t-bars and most runs will be open? I need help!!! Please someone give me an answer!!! I am worried the snow wont be good. My son is really looking forward to riding on the t-bars up near Karols and Antons, and the Basin. Having said this all there is still another 3 weeks until we go, and a few days this week that are forcast for snow. Let me know!!!

Best answer:

It will be better because I was there last year in the same situation. I have a younger son who refuses to go on lifts and only likes the tbars. It was a couple of days before we got there and there was no snow on the ground, they got a blizzard and it was okay. Get your son of the tbars because he could get attached and never go on the lifts, I am worried that is going to happen to my son. The forecast is good and there are supposed to be many flurries between know and then. There is not a bad run on the mountain so even if 7 lifts are open, you will have a great time, and as the other person said, get your son lessons, he will have a lot more fun if he knows how to ski the right way. Have fun!

i am going skiing in perisher & thredbo this weekend and need cheap ski pants/ jackets and boots for kids &?

Full question:

adults let me know if i can buy them some where in sydney please?

Best answer:

You can buy them at ski shops. There are a couple in York St in the City and some in the burbs http://wikiski.com/wiki/index.php/Where_to_Buy_or_Hire_Equipment_in_Australia Have you considered hiring? If this is your first time buying is quite expensive for something that you and your children may not enjoy. In Jindabyne there is a shop in Nuggets Crossing that sells a whole lot of tourist trap stuff, but also has some good prices on gear. There are a few other shops in Jindy, and their prices are quite competitive.

Where is the best skiing in Australia?

Full question:

Looking to compare the different ski fields in Australia, and would like to know where is the best ski fields in Australia. Is it Thredbo, or Mt Hotham, or somewhere else?

Best answer:

Out of Mt Bulla, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Thredbo or Perisher I'd go with either of the last two. Victorian runs are shorter that the NSW fields. NZ has better runs again at either Mt Hutt, The Remarkables or Coronet Peak. Just my opinion.

Has anyone ever been to the snow?

Full question:

Full question:

i want to go to the snow with my dad cause i got a new snowboard but he said it cost 3 grand i was wondering how much it would cost to go to thredbo or perisa in nsw for 2-3 days with my dad and me the cheapest way thanks

Best answer:

I agree with the other person. Be careful what you ask online. If you go to a website for travel, (orbitz or travelocity) they may be able to give a general idea of flights hotel's etc. However also take into consideration the time your dad would have to take off of work.

I believe the daily rate is ~$27, does is this just an entry fee or a daily fee to be there.

What happens to Thredbo/Perisher in Summer when there is no snow left?

Full question:

I was also wondering what happens to the job stability of the Ski/Snow boarding Instructors at ski resorts?

Best answer:

Those areas are then part of bushwalking e.t.c for the Alpine Summer. The ski resorts are still operating as summer resorts for the summer season (of course at a reduced capacity and cost), which though not as huge as winter still has wonderful elements. Going in the spring (post melt) and summer reveals some wonderful alpine wildflowers and bush trails. You'll find many of the ski instructors return to their summer jobs or head overseas for the northern winter ski seasons.

how did the Australian community respond to the thredbo landslide?

Full question:

what was the response of community based groups to the thredbo landslide? eg; SES, rural fire service etc.

Best answer:

The Thredbo landslide much like the Miners in Tasmania had us all stuck to our tv's and talking about it at work. The community services saw it as a great effort when they finally released Stuart Diver. I remember flicking between the news coverage of the landslide and video hits and the song playing was 'Alone' by the BeeGee's, it was so appropriate and to this day it still reminds me of the landslide every time I hear it.
